China’s ‘Mountain Cry’ Wakes Village Roadshow, Hairun

The project won the prize for ‘best artistic potential’ at Beijing Festival's Pitch & Catch event.

Mountain Cry,” a drama by first time Chinese film-maker Larry Yang Zi, is to be backed by a prestigious consortium of Chinese and international production houses.

The project will be co-developed and co-produced by Hairun Pictures and Village Roadshow Entertainment Group Asia, the China-based production offshoot of Australia’s Village Roadshow.

The pair will be joined by Asian-focused film investor Ivanhoe Pictures and the U.S.’s Story Mining & Supply, which will contribute development finance and marketing resources.

The project won the prize for “best artistic potential” at last month’s Pitch & Catch, the project market of the Beijing International Film Festival.

Based on the novel of the same title by Ge Shuiping, the story is that of a beautiful mute woman who is suddenly left as a widow in a tightly-knit mountain village community. After her husband’s death the villagers slowly come to understand more of her. Adaptation rights were optioned by Hairun.

“What makes Yang Zi’s ‘Mountain Cry’ script so outstanding is the powerful drama of its story and the fact that it feels authentically local in its setting, characters and dialog, but still resonates with universal themes of forgiveness, compassion and redemption,” said Ellen Eliasoph, who was one of three jurors selecting the Beijing Pitch & Catch winners and who also heads VREGA as president and CEO.

“As a passionate lover of film, I aspire to bring a diverse offering of contemporary Chinese films to the international market,” said Liu Yanming, chairman of Hairun Media Group.
