CANNES– A24 has acquired U.S. rights to Ewan McGregor starrer “Son of a Gun,” an Australian heist thriller directed by first-timer Julius Avery.

McGregor stars opposite Alicia Vikander (“A Royal Affair”) and Brenton Thwaites (“Maleficent”). UTA, which represents Avery,  McGregor and Vikander, handled the U.S. sale to A24.

Altitude Film Sales is selling international rights and hosted a market screening for the film in Cannes.  Timothy White at Southern Light Films produced the movie, which was backed by Screen Australia. Hopscotch Entertainment One will release the film in Australia and New Zealand.

Pic centers around the relationship between between Australia’s highest profile criminal and his young protege.

A former commercials director, Avery, is considered one of Australia’s most promising new helmers, along with David Michod. His 2008 short film “Jerrycan” won Cannes’ jury prize and best short at the AFI.
