Company launches new Canadian distribution venture with 'The Riot Club'

LONDON — Canadian production company Thunderbird has bought U.K. niche distributor Soda Pictures, and has launched a distribution operation in Canada.

Thunderbird has also acquired Canadian rights to Lone Scherfig’s “The Riot Club.”

Thunderbird is a private company, which includes Thunderbird Films, Reunion Pictures and Sea to Sky Studios (a joint venture with Lionsgate). Tim Gamble is CEO, Ivan Fecan is executive chair and the largest investor is Frank Giustra, founder of Lionsgate.

Soda will continue to operate under its own brand. The two Soda principals, Eve Gabereau and Edward Fletcher, will continue to lead the company, which was founded in 2002, and has a library of more than 250 films. Their 2014 slate includes Jim Jarmusch’s “Only Lovers Left Alive,” Nigerian Civil War drama “Half of a Yellow Sun,” starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, and eco-thriller “Night Moves” by Kelly Reichardt.”
