Brisbane to Get Revamped New Festival

Asian films showcased as APSA Awards and Brisbane festival combine forces.

HONG KONG – The long-running Brisbane Intl. Film Festival is to be replaced by the Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival. The new event will be closely linked to the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

The move comes as a result of Screen Queensland, the Queensland state film funding body, agreeing to give up control of the BIFF. Screen Queensland will instead provide A$700,000 ($660,023) over three years to the new event, which is to be run by Brisbane Marketing.

The festival will run for 16 days (Nov. 29-Dec. 14) and include screenings of 60 films from the APSAs. The APSA ceremony will be held Dec. 11 in Brisbane.

“The Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival will be a high-caliber film event showcasing the filmmakers, films and documentaries of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards,” said Graham Quirk, Brisbane’s lord mayor. “In addition to the flagship screenings of films from the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, BAPFF will present a specially curated showcase of the creative and cultural breadth of the works of filmmakers from the vast Asia Pacific region.”

“Our decision to outsource the film festival is part of Screen Queensland’s three-year strategic plan and our efforts in revitalizing the Queensland screen industry,” said Screen Queensland chairman  Peter Little. He said industry feedback had asked for the Brisbane festival to continue, but had that the agency should not be running it.

Kiki Fung, head programmer for the BIFF, will move across to Brisbane Marketing to continue programming for the new-look film festival.

“Bringing these events together will make the films of Asia Pacific region more accessible for locals and visitors,” said APSA executive chairman Michael Hawkins.
