Box Office: ‘The Other Woman’ Looks to Rule With $20 Million-Plus

The women of “The Other Woman” are headed for a clear U.S. box office victory, with early estimates pointing to a weekend topping $20 million.

Fox’s female-skewing comedy is on track for an $8 million Friday — somewhat above recent forecasts that suggested an opening weekend in the $17 million to $19 million range. “The Other Woman” opened last week in Australia with $4.2 million and expands to 28 other markets this weekend. The foreign take so far is $9.1 million.

The film, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, appeared to be succeeding with audiences despite less-than-enthusiastic reviews with a 24% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The revenge comedy will easily break Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s” three-week winning streak. The most recent films to come out on top on four consecutive weekends were 2012’s “Hunger Games” and 2008’s “The Dark Knight.”

The “Captain America” sequel looks likely to finish the frame in the $12 million-$14 million range after grossing nearly $209 million in its first three weeks.

Sony’s faith-based drama “Heaven Is for Real,” in its second weekend, and Fox’s “Rio 2,” in its third, were also battling “Captain America” for the runner-up slot during a relatively soft frame compared to the prior, Easter weekend.

“Heaven” and “Rio 2” both finished just above $22 million last Sunday and are projected to decline 40%-45%. “Heaven” has cumed $38 million in nine days while “Rio 2” has topped $82 million in two weeks.

Relativity Media’s action-thriller “Brick Mansions,” starring the late Paul Walker, appeared to be heading for a modest launch in the $8 million-$10 million range. The actioner grossed $400,000 during Thursday night screenings. Critics have been unimpressed, giving “Mansions” a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Walker died in a car accident last November, and Relativity has worked closely with his family during marketing.

Lionsgate horror film “The Quiet Ones” looks to be living up to its title on launch weekend with a smallish $5 million to $6 million bow. “Quiet” centers on a university professor and students who perform experiments on a disturbed young woman.
