Box Office: ‘Ride Along’ Heading for a Three-Peat to Beat ‘That Awkward Moment’

In the battle of buddy comedies, Kevin Hart’s “Ride Along” looks likely to prevail over the opening of Zac Efron’s “That Awkward Moment”with about $12.1 million during Super Bowl weekend at the U.S. box office.

Both were heading toward between $4 million and $4.5 million on Friday. “Awkward” launched with $246,000 from Thursday night late shows, but appeared to be coming in at $10 million for the weekend — below initial  forecasts for $11 million to $15 million.

Universals’ “Ride Along,” which also stars Ice Cube, opened on Martin Luther King weekend and is playing in 2,865 locations. It has gone past $80 million in its first two weeks and a first-place finish would make it the first movie to win three straight weekends since “Gravity” did so in October.

Focus Features is aiming “Awkward,” playing at 2,809 sites, at female moviegoers and is opening it in 2,800 locations.

Paramount’s wide release of Kate Winslet-Josh Brolin romancer “Labor Day” is falling flat with $2.3 million at 2,584 on Friday for a projected $6.2 million weekend, coming in at the low end of forecasts.

Disney’s sing-a-long re-release of “Frozen” appeared heading for a third-place finish with $2.45 million on Friday for a three-day gross around $9.2 million. That would push the U.S. cume to $360 million — the fourth highest performance by a title released in 2013 after “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Iron Man 3” and “Despicable Me 2” — and more than $825 million worldwide.

Open Road’s third weekend of “The Nut Job” and Universal’s fifth fame of “Lone Survivor” appeared likely to be heading for about $7 million each this weekend. That would give “The Nut Job” $50 million while “Survivor” will hit $104 million.

  1. Yes what is happening to the movies? It seems there isn’t a lot out there.

  2. Martin says:

Great timing. No competition at all for two weeks. Staying home for a second weekend because the new release suck this week, too. Thanks for nothing, Hollywood.

  3. Bill says:

I don’t know how the sing-along version is doing but I just got out of a 5 PM showing of the regular “Frozen” that was nearly sold out!

Disney hit it so far out of the park with this film it’s absolutely incredible.
