Gravity

'Philomena' and 'Wolf of Wall Street' compete in major categories

LONDON — “Gravity” leads the BAFTA film kudos contest with 11 nominations, followed by “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle” with 10 each, and “Captain Phillips” with nine.

Those four pics dominate the main categories. They all compete for best film, where they are joined by “Philomena,” and in the helming category, in which “The Wolf of Wall Street” also has a candidate.

Those six films also feature in both the screenplay and lead thesp races. They are joined by “Blue Jasmine,” “Nebraska,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Behind the Candelabra” in the screenplay categories, and “Blue Jasmine,” “Nebraska” and “Saving Mr. Banks” in the lead thesp sections.

“Saving Mr. Banks” and “Behind the Candelabra” both had five nominations in total, while “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Rush” and “Philomena” had four each. Three noms apiece were taken by “Blue Jasmine,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Nebraska.”

Among the U.K. distributors of the films, Warner Bros. fared best with 20 noms, followed by rising star eOne, which took 15 noms. Fellow indie distrib Entertainment had 13 nominations and Sony Pictures Releasing had 11. Disney had eight, while Studiocanal and Universal took seven each.

Woody Allen’s original screenplay nom for “Blue Jasmine” is his 24th BAFTA nomination, which makes him the recipient of the most film nominations in the org’s history. He has won 10 BAFTAs, which is believed to be more than anyone else.

Judi Dench became BAFTA’s most nominated movie actress, with her leading actress nom for “Philomena” taking her tally to 15, including six wins, most recently for “Iris” in 2002. This year she is up against two BAFTA veterans, Emma Thompson for “Saving Mr. Banks” and Cate Blanchett for “Blue Jasmine.” Thompson has been nommed by BAFTA seven times and Blanchett on six occasions.

Martin Scorsese picked up his 12th BAFTA nomination as director of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” He has won three BAFTAs, all of them for “Goodfellas” in 1991.

Thesps Luke Evans and Helen McCrory revealed the nominations Wednesday at BAFTA’s London headquarters.

The awards, which will be hosted by Stephen Fry, take place Feb. 16 at London’s Royal Opera House.
