‘American Sniper’ Hits $1 Million in 5 Days From 4 Theaters

American Sniper

Following a record-setting Christmas Day debut, “American Sniper” has hit the $1 million mark in five days despite playing in only four theaters.

Warner Bros.’ “Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, opened with $240,212 at venues in Dallas, Los Angeles and New York — setting a record for a limited release under 10 screens on Christmas Day. It took in $166,000 on Monday to push its total to $1.04 million.

Clint Eastwood directed the R-rated “American Sniper” from a script by Jason Hall, based on Chris Kyle’s autobiography about his tour of duty in Iraq. Warner Bros. will expand “American Sniper” into a nationwide release on Jan. 16 — the day after Oscar nominations are announced.

Paramount’s “Selma” also crossed the $1 million mark on Monday, taking $107,773 at 19 locations in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. The $20 million film, which chronicles the 1965 civil rights campaign, will expand into a nationwide release on Jan. 9.

Directed by Ava DuVernay, “Selma” stars David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. and Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon Johnson.

  3. PETER says:

Reg, please don’t gloat! However, AMERICAN SNIPER is my favorite movie of the year, and all Americans should see it. Clint Eastwood should win the Best Director Oscar. At his age he told it as it is and was, with no frills, just a clean, honest movie, that is Clint’s style. And Bradley Cooper gave us a heart-breaking, career defining performance. The young actress that played Chris Kyle’s wife did a fabulous job. God bless our U.S. military and their families and our U.S. veterans.

  4. Reg says:

So Sniper beat Selma at the box-office despite the latter being on nearly five times as many screens. Interesting.

  5. PETER says:

AMERICAN SNIPER is the best movie of the year. Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, and everybody concerned did an amazing job. All U.S. citizens should see AMERICAN SNIPER to see what our U.S. military and their families go through for us.
