American Sniper” and “Selma” — two of the last awards contenders to open this year — have launched impressively in their Christmas Day debuts.

Warner Bros.’ “Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, was particularly stellar with $240,212 at four venues — breaking the all-time record for a limited release under 10 screens on Christmas Day.

It played in Dallas, Los Angeles and New York.

Clint Eastwood directed the R-rated “American Sniper” from a script by Jason Hall, based on Chris Kyle’s autobiography about his tour of duty in Iraq and his struggles as a father and husband.

Warner Bros. will expand “American Sniper” into a nationwide release on Jan. 16 — the day after Oscar nominations are announced.

Paramount’s “Selma” also scored solidly with $322,000 at 19 locations in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. That’s nearly $17,000 per venue.

The $20 million film chronicles the 1965 civil rights campaign and has been nominated for four Golden Globes. It will expand into a nationwide release on Jan. 9.

Directed by Ava DuVernay, “Selma” stars David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. and Tom Wilkinson as President Johnson. Also starring are Cuba Gooding Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi, Common, Carmen Ejogo, Lorraine Toussaint, Tim Roth and Oprah Winfrey.

Producers are Christian Colson, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Winfrey.

A24 opens the final awards season contender, “A Most Violent Year,” on New Year’s Eve.

Peter and LOL, first of all, why all the vitriol? Is it because you’re anonymous, like the rest of us? What’s the point in spewing politically-based hate and gross generalizations?

This is a film about one individual; it’s not a political treatise just because Republican Clint Eastwood directed it. Perhaps you’d like the political affiliations of everyone who worked on the film.

I’m a liberal Democrat; I don’t hate the country and just so you know, I had no involvement with the film. I’ve been championing this movie ever since attending a screening several weeks ago. And I know other liberals who feel the same way. It’s a terrific film about one man’s life; well directed, produced and acted. End of story.

  2. PETER says:

How many of you liberal, USA-hating leftists have even seen the outstanding AMERICAN SNIPER? You all need to be drafted into the USA military to get a taste of reality.

  3. PETER says:

Reg, you need your leftist ass straightened out at Camp Pendleton Marine base for a couple of months.

    • Reg says:

      >>Reg, you need your leftist ass straightened out ..

Yeah, I don’t think you’ve QUITE understood my post, Peter. LoL, as they say.

  4. Reg says:

    >>American Sniper is pure redneck propaganda..

So explain to us why those intolerant redneck havens of, er, Manhattan and Los Angeles, have embraced the movie to such staggering grosses?.

  5. Bradley cooper’s hot

  6. PETER says:

AMERICAN SNIPER is the best movie of the year. All USA citizens should see it to see what our low paid military goes through. Clint Eastwood should get the Oscar for Best Director, and Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller are outstanding as Chris Kyle and his wife. We will see how the leftist entertainment business, critics, and media treat it, but even Hollywood extreme liberal Ben Affleck came out in support of AMERICAN SNIPER.

    • BeReal says:

American Sniper plays like a big cliche – superficial on every level. The two actors make a heroic effort to rise above the melodramatic stew of a screenplay and they deserve credit for trying. Sadly, that’s the best the movie has to offer.

    • Michael Anthony says:

Nothing like a little bias. Despite middle of the road reviews, if it fails st the box office, its all because of the left?? Sorry. But there’s plenty of right wingers in this country. They’d showed up for other films. Thus, if it fails, blame yourself. Oscar is likely to ignore the film, except maybe for Cooper.

      • Sam E. says:

Either that or people including Republicans are more complicated than you assume.

      • LOL says:

American Sniper is pure redneck propaganda made by a old dude whose cinematic politics don’t run in a straight line.

Clint Eastwood is a liberal in denial. A closeted Democrat afraid to come out.
