Alicia Rhett, One of Oldest Surviving

Actress played India Wilkes in the 1939 film

One of the oldest surviving cast members of “Gone with the Wind” has died in South Carolina. She was 98.

Alicia Rhett played India Wilkes in the 1939 film starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable.

Kimberly Farfone Borts is spokeswoman for the Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community in Charleston, S.C. She told the Associated Press that Rhett died about 5 p.m. Friday at Gadsden, where she had lived since August 2002.

In the movie, India Wilkes is a sister of Ashley Wilkes, with whom Scarlett O’Hara is deeply in love before Ashley marries his cousin and Scarlett becomes involved with Rhett Butler.

The news release says Alicia Rhett was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Savannah, Ga.

Farfone said Rhett also was a portrait painter who sketched her fellow actors on the set.

Olivia de Havilland, who played Melanie Wilkes, is one of the last surviving cast members. She lives in France.

It’s sad anytime good people die! I loved Alicia Rhett’s performance in Gone with the Wind. Alicia lived
to a very great age! Not many people make it to 96 Bless her heart! She was a wonderful actress! Vivien Leigh only made it to 53.

SHK’s second comment has now vanished, leaving only three comments, though it says ‘5 COMMENTS’ next to ‘Leave a Reply’.

  4. SHK says:

    Isn’t Olivia deHavilland still alive?

    • anne says:

As the article states, deHavilland is alive and living in France.

      • johntshea says:

When I first read it the article indeed did not mention Olivia de Havilland but identified Ms Rhett as the oldest rather than the last surviving cast member, which was correct as far as I know. I commented that Olivia de Havilland is a year younger than Ms Rhett about 6 minutes after SHK’s comment, but my comment has vanished. The plot thickens!

      • SHK says:

At the time of my comment, the article incorrectly stated that Ms. Rhett was “the last surviving cast member.” It has since been amended. :)

Olivia de Havilland is a year younger.
