AFM: Gaumont And Wild Bunch Encounter Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘The Neon Demon’

Following Cannes-competing “Only God Forgives,” Gaumont and Wild Bunch are set to re-team on Nicolas Winding Refn’s “The Neon Demon.”

The two Paris-based powerhouses will co-finance and co-distribute the movie, kicking off pre-sales at the AFM.

A horror tale toplined by a soon-to-be-announced female star, “The Neon Demon” is penned by Refn and Mary Laws.

“One morning I woke and realized I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty,” said Refn about the origins of the movie. “After making ‘Drive’ and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew I had to return to tell the story of ‘The Neon Demon.'”

Refn said he looked forward to continue working with Wild Bunch and Gaumont and suggested the two-picture deal signed with both outfits will likely be extended.

Refn’s partner, Lene Borglum (“Valhalla Rising,” “Only God Forgives”) will be producing under their joint company, Space Rocket.

Principal photography is set to begin in the first quarter of 2015 and will be filmed in L.A.. The release is expected for 2016.

Cast will be unveiled later this year. Refn, whose movies all have a singular and edgy visual style, is bringing back his regular creative team: Editor Matthew Newman and composer Cliff Martinez. The key crew will be completed by “The Grandmaster”‘s cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd.

The Danish helmer is also on board to direct “Barbarella,” a high-profile TV series developed by Gaumont International Television for French paybox Canal Plus.
