Aaron Swartz Documentary ‘Internet’s Own Boy’ Set for June 27 Release

FilmBuff and Participant Media have set a June 27 multiplatform release for “The Internet’s Own Boy,” the documentary on the late activist Aaron Swartz.

Participant’s television network Pivot will broacast the film later in 2014. The film is also available for pre-order today on Vimeo On Demand and iTunes.

Produced, written and directed by Brian Knappenberger, the documentary first premiered at Sundance in January before screening at the SXSW Film Festival and as the opening night selection at the Hot Docs Film Festival.

“The Internet’s Own Boy” will open at the IFC Center in New York and at the Sundance Cinemas in Los Angeles, as well as theaters in 15 other markets nationwide.

“We wanted to bring Aaron’s story to as many people as possible, so the day ‘The Internet’s Own Boy’ debuts in theaters, we are also offering the film across a variety of digital services and platforms in a model fitting with what Aaron architected and stood for” said Knappenberger.

Swartz was a brilliant software programmer and Internet activist who died in his Brooklyn apartment at the age of 26 in January 2013. New York City’s chief medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging.

Swartz founded the group Demand Progress to oppose antipiracy legislation last year. He was indicted in 2011 on federal data-theft charges for breaking into the MIT computer system and allegedly downloading 4.8 million documents and was due to go to trial in April 2013.

The film explores the arrest, the prosecution’s tactics in bringing the case to trial through the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and the possible future of information access on the Internet.

Geoff Berkshire gave the film a strong review for Variety, calling it “spellbinding.”
