ROME – “How To Train Your Dragon 2” will open Italy’s Taormina Film Festival which will host the U.S. blockbuster’s Italo launch with a spectacular 3D screening in its 8,000 seat ancient Greek theatre with helmer Dean DeBlois in tow.
The 20th Century Fox/DreamWorks Animation sequel, which will world preem in Cannes, will hit U.S. theatres June 13 and screen at Taormina June 14. The “Dragon 2” Italo release date is instead August 16, due to Italy’s structural box office scarcity in early summer when Italos hit the beach en masse.
Located in Sicily, Taormina is among Europe’s oldest fests, being relaunched in recent editions with a more mainstream format by artistic director Mario Sesti and general manager Tiziana Rocca.
Taormina’s 60th edition will run June 14-21.
