Universal Picks Up Catherine Zeta-Jones Starrer

Universal Pictures Intl. has acquired worldwide rights to British comedy “Dad’s Army,” which will be directed by Oliver Parker.

The film is adapted from long-running U.K. TV series “Dad’s Army,” originally created by Jimmy Perry and David Croft. The movie is written by Hamish McColl and produced by Damian Jones.

The pic is set in 1944 when World War II is reaching its climax. The Allies are poised to invade France and finally defeat the German army. But in a town on the southern coast of England, Walmington-on-Sea, morale amongst the aging army reserve force, the Home Guard, is low. Their new mission — to patrol the Dover army base — is a chance to revive spirits and reputation … that is until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits.

The cast includes Bill Nighy as Wilson, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Rose, Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring, Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones, Michael Gambon as Godfrey, Blake Harrison as Pike, Danny Mays as Walker, Bill Paterson as Fraser, Sarah Lancashire, Alison Steadman, Mark Gatiss and Annette Crosbie. Shooting commences in October on location in Yorkshire.

The film is a Universal Pictures presentation of a DJ Films production, supported by Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund, in association with British Film Co., Worldwide Theatrix and Jimmy Perry Productions. The film has Jimmy Perry, Ann Croft, Penny Croft, Hugo Heppell, Steve Milne, Christian Eisenbeiss, Josephine Rose and Miles Ketley serving as executive producers.

Universal Pictures Intl. acquired the film through its division Universal Pictures Intl. Production.

Good to see that East Yorkshire will be the location for remake of Dads Army, especially in view of the fact that Catherine Zeta Jones stared in Darling Buds of May made in yorkshire,so look forward to welcoming her back to the area, altho.one cannot recreate the exact past of the original script characters, the timeless characters and worldwide appreciation of original Dads Army will long continue,Im sure with a great cast on board this will be a new classic in British Film History, jolly jovial quips and Rule Britannia!

  3. cadavra says:

Technically, this qualifies as a remake, as there was a feature version in 1971. However, with Nighy, Jones, Courtenay, Gambon, et al on board, it oughta be pretty bloomin’ good.

  4. no not a good idea ….if you must TRY and recreate it use the actors named but change the characters I WILL NOT BE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THIS ,,ACTUALLY I ILL NOT GO and why isn`t ian lavender involved ……

  5. Please God nooooooooo! Yes, it’s excellent casting with some fine, talented actors. But you just cannot recreate a classic. Look at the remake of Inspector Clouseau, The Ladykillers, Total Recall, Arthur, The Italian Job… The list goes on and on!
