Microcinema Nabs Iranian Drama ‘Melbourne’

VENICE — Italy’s Microcinema Distribuzione has acquired local rights to Iranian drama “Melbourne,” which opened Venice Critics’ Week out of competition.

A first work, written and directed by Nima Javidi, “Melbourne” stars “A Separation” protag Peyman Moaadi in the story of a young man and his partner who are prevented from leaving Iran for Australia by a tragic event.

The drama previously bowed at Tehran’s Fajr Film Festival and was also at the Cannes Market in May, sold by Iranian Independents.

Iranian Independents’ topper Mohammad Attebai says he is in talks with several other prospective buyers for the film, which will continue making the rounds on the festival circuit.

Microcinema is Italy’s leading theatrical digital distributor with a network of some 300 screens. Its releases include Aleksei Fedorchenko’s “Silent Souls,” following its 2010 Venice bow.
