LONDON — Ethan Hawke has taken the role of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker in “Born to Be Blue,” which has just started lensing.

Pic also stars Carmen Ejogo, who appeared in “The Purge: Anarchy,” and will be in the upcoming Martin Luther King biopic “Selma,” and Callum Keith Rennie, whose credits include “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Memento.”

Pic is written and directed by Robert Budreau, and produced by Jennifer Jonas and Leonard Farlinger of New Real Films, Budreau of Lumanity Productions and Jake Seal of Black Hangar Studios. Executive producers include William Santor, John Hills, Andrew Chang-sang of Productivity Media, Adam Moryto, Stefan Jacobs, D. Matt Geller and Gurpreet Chandhoke.

K5 Intl., which is handling the film’s international rights, is introducing the film to buyers at the American Film Market. Entertainment One is distributing the film in Canada.

Budreau’s film is inspired by the rise of Baker, who has it all, talent to burn and movie star good looks, but his self-destructive ways destroy his career. It charts Baker’s comeback and the tumultuous love affair that changed the way he played music and helped him on the road to redemption.

Hawke’s recent credits include Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood.” Upcoming film projects include Michael and Peter Spierig’s “Predestination,” Michael Almereyda’s “Cymbeline,” and Andrew Niccol’s “Good Kill.”

Last year, he co-wrote, with Linklater and Julie Delpy, “Before Midnight,” the third film in the “Before…” series, in which he also starred. “Before Midnight” was nominated for an Academy Award for adapted screenplay.
