London’s Tricycle Theatre Backpedals in Dispute with U.K. Jewish Film Festival

Tricycle, which is led by Indhu Rubasingham (above), removed conditions on festival

LONDON — London’s Tricycle Theatre, whose artistic director is Indhu Rubasingham, has back-pedaled in its dispute with the U.K. Jewish Film Festival over funding from Israel.

The venue had refused to host the festival’s screenings while the event had Israel’s embassy in London as a sponsor, as part of a protest against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. The venue has now removed that condition.

The Tricycle and UKJFF said in a joint statement: “Following lengthy discussions between the Tricycle and UKJFF, the Tricycle has now withdrawn its objection, and invited back the U.K. Jewish Film Festival on the same terms as in previous years with no restrictions on funding from the Embassy of Israel in London.”

The festival, which runs Nov. 6-23, will not return to the theater this year as alternative screening venues have been found, but the two parties have agreed to work together “to rebuild their relationship.”

“We hope to begin the process of rebuilding trust and confidence with a view to holding events in the future,” the two parties said.

“We both profoundly hope that those who take differing views on the events of the last few weeks will follow our lead and come together to acknowledge that dialogue, reconciliation and engagement will resolve points of difference and ensure that cultural diversity thrives in all communities.”
