Peter Danner’s Funny Balloons has charmed Cannes buyers with Cuba-set “Return to Ithaca,” directed by Laurent Cantet, best known for his Palme d’Or-winning “The Class.”
The film pre-sold to the U.K. (Network), Italy (Lucky Red), Spain (Golem), Portugal (Midas), Greece (Strada), Brazil (Imovision) and Benelux (Cineart via Panache Prods.).
“Ithaca” was produced by Full House. Orange Studio, Haut et Court and Funny Balloons co-produce; Haut et Court will distribute in France.
Written with Cantet and Cuban novelist Leonardo Padura,“Ithaca” centers around five old friends who get together on a Havana rooftop-terrace to celebrate the return of one them from a 16-year exile.
Another highlight on Funny Balloons’ slate: Abel Ferrara’s “Pasolini,” starring Willem Dafoe.
Pic was produced by France’s Capricci, Belgium’s Tarantula and Italy’s Urania Pictures backed by Arte Cinema, Eurimages, Canal Plus and the Wallimage film fund.
In Cannes, Funny Balloons is selling (in association with Versatile) Sebastian Silva’s “Nasty Baby” and “Near Death Experience,” directed by Benoit Delepine and Gustave Kerven.
