Berlin: Fortissimo Picks Up ‘Lucia’ and ‘Ghadi’

Hong Kong seller has five films in Berlinale

Fortissimo Films has added two more titles to its fast-expanding Berlin festival and market lineup.

The Hong Kong- and Amsterdam-based sales agency has picked up Dutch thriller “Lucia de B.” and drama “Ghadi” from Lebanon.

Fortissimo recently added international sales duties on Berlin competition title “Black Coal, Thin Ice,” and Fruit Chan’s apocalyptic Hong Kong thriller “The Midnight After,” which plays in Panorama.

With the previously announced Philippines film “Unfriend,” Alfred Molina and John Lithgow-starring “Love Is Strange,” both in Panorama, and partial rights to “Final Recipe” in the Culinary Cinema section, Fortissimo has five films in the festival and two more screening in the market.

“Lucia de B.” is the latest film from Paula Van der Oest, whose “Zus & Zo” was previously Oscar-nominated and is based on real events, involving a nurse who is jailed for life after being found guilty of murdering seven of her patients. Her case became a cause celebre when a junior attorney general discovers inconsistencies and realizes that a miscarriage of justice may have taken place.

The film stars Ariane Schluter as the nurse Lucia, along with Sallie Harmsen, Fedja van Huet, Barry Atsma and Annet Malherbe.

Produced by Rinkel Film, “Lucia” is in post.

“Ghadi” is the story of a handicapped boy whoM villagers presume to be a demon. The boy’s father pleads to prevent the family being expelled and comes up with a novel solution. The film is the feature debut of Emmy-winning TV director Amin Dora and written by George Khabbaz (“Under The Bombs”), who also stars in the film.

The film was released to both critical and box office success in Lebanon late last year. An international version of the film is now in post-production aimed for a festival debut this Spring. Production was by Gabriel Chamoun, of Lebanese production house The Talkies, in cooperation with the Doha Film Institute.
