Box Office: ‘Purge: Anarchy’ Wins Friday, But ‘Planet of the Apes’ Still Rules With $35 Million

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is ruler of the box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The Fox sequel is set to outgross a slew of newcomers with $35 million, but lost the Friday race to “The Purge: Anarchy,” which scared up $13 million on track for a $27.5 million launch. “Planet of the Apes,” on the other hand, made $10.4 million on Friday.

Universal’s “Purge” sequel leads the new wide releases, which include Columbia Pictures’ “Sex Tape” and Disney’s “Planes: Fire & Rescue.”

The film was produced by horror king Jason Blum for a meager $9 million. Its predecessor had a micro budget a third that size and hauled a surprising $34 million when it opened last summer. The pic went on to earn $89 million worldwide.

The last big horror hit was last September’s “Insidious Chapter 2” (also produced by Blum), which launched to $40 million.

Like “The Purge,” “Planes” was warmly embraced by an underserved audience. Aside from “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and “Maleficent,” the summer has seen few family films.

The sequel to last summer’s “Planes” made $6.3 million on Friday for a third place finish. It’s headed for a $17 million-plus opening. Like “Purge,” it looks to be falling behind the first installment’s earnings. “Planes” launched to $22 million last summer before commanding $219 million worldwide.

Sex Tape” came in fourth with $5.7 million on Friday. The summer’s latest raunchy comedy (star Cameron Diaz’s second of the year) is headed for a lower-than-expected $16 million debut.

The film, which cost over $40 million to produce, reunites Diaz with her “Bad Teacher” co-star Jason Segel and director Jake Kasdan. But the trio failed to recreate the box office magic of their first collaboration, which opened to $31.6 million in 2011.

Diaz’s “The Other Woman” opened to no. 1 with $24 in late April in a much less competitive market.

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” rounded out the top five with an estimated $2.7 million. It will finish the weekend with $9 million — a 44% drop — raising its cume to $222.5 million.

Despite the flurry of activity, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” still reigns supreme, making it one of the few summer pics to hold on to the top spot for two weekends in a row.

The simian sequel opened to $72.6 million last weekend, outperforming its predecessor, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” which launched to $54.8 million in 2011.
