Media Access Awards Honor Noah Hawley, Margaret Nagle

Noah Hawley, creator of the “Fargo” mini, and Margaret Nagle, “Red Band Society” creator and “The Good Lie” screenwriter, will be among the honorees of the 2014 Media Access Awards, to be held Oct. 16 at the Beverly Hilton.

The event honors showbiz individuals who promote awareness of the disability experience, access for people with disabilities, and the accurate depiction of characters with disabilities.

Honorees are Hawley (in photo above), who will receive the Producers Guild of America George Sunga Award; Nagle, Writers Guild of America West Evan Somers Memorial Award;  Susan Bluestein and Jason Kennedy, Casting Society of America award; Christopher Reeve, Norman Lear-Geri Jewell Humanitarian Award; Jamie Brewer, RJ Mitte Award; Kathy Buckley, SAG-AFTRA Disability Awareness Award; and Danny Murphy, SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award.

The event’s host is Robert David Hall, who appears on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Hall lost both legs in a 1978 car accident; he uses prosthetic limbs and has played several characters who share this disability.

Among the presenters will be Peter Farrelly, Stephen Collins, Pauley Perrette, Vanessa Marano, RJ Mitte and Wilson Cruz.

“We at the Media Access Awards are keenly aware how the media plays a major role in forming public perception of disability. So, our job is to support and celebrate those actors, directors, writers and producers who are helping to change stereotypes. This year’s MAA recipients perfectly reflect our mission” said Deborah Calla, Media Access Awards chair and chair of the PGA diversity committee.

The 2014 Media Awards are co-sponsored by Friends of Californians with Disabilities, The Casting Society of America, the Producers Guild, SAG-AFTRA, WGAW, Starz, Kevin Bright, Robert David Hall, NBCUniversal, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and CBS.

The Media Access Awards were created in 1979 by the California Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities along with producer Fern Field and her late husband, Norman Brooks.
