Tokyo Festival To Open With Marvel’s ‘Big Hero 6,’ Close With ‘Parasyte’

TOKYO –The Tokyo International Film Festival will open its 27th edition with the world premiere of “Big Hero 6,” Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Don Hall and Chris Williams animation about the adventures of a teenaged robotics prodigy and his robot companion in the fictional city of San Fransokyo.

The fest will unspool Oct. 23-31 in the Roppongi Hills entertainment and shopping complex, as well as other venues around Tokyo. “Big Hero 6” will be released by Disney in Japan on Dec. 20.

Closing the fest will be “Parasyte,” a sci-fi actioner by Takashi Yamazaki, who also directed the smash WWII kamikaze pilot drama “The Eternal Zero.”

Based on a hit comic by Hitoshi Iwaaki that was serialized from 1990 to 1995 and sold 11 million copies in paperback editions, “Parasyte” stars Shota Sometani (“Himizu”) as a high school boy whose arm is invaded by a alien life form — and must somehow survive among the many other humans whose entire brains have been appropriated by alien parasites. The pic’s first part will be released by Toho on Nov. 29, while the second part is scheduled to bow in 2015.

“It is significant that ‘Big Hero 6’ will be screened at TIFF as this film is deeply influenced by Japanese culture,” said TIFF MD Nobushige Toshima. The festival will also have a strong bias towards animation this year.

Overlapping the festival, the TIFFCOM content market will be held Oct. 21-23 at the Grand Pacific Le Daiba hotel in Tokyo Bay.
