Tokyo festival To Hold Major Focus on ‘Evangelion’ Creator Hideaki Anno

TOKYO — The 27th edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival, which unspools Oct. 23-31 at various venues in Tokyo, will present a major section devoted to the work of Hideaki Anno, an animator best known abroad for the “Evangelion” SF series. 

According to festival organizers, the section will include 50 of Anno’s works in a range of genres, from student films and promo videos to TV programs and theatrical features.

Born in 1960, Anno worked as a character animator on “Nausicaa Valley of the Wind,” the 1984 film that first brought helmer Hayao Miyazaki to international attention. Anno subsequently worked with Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli animation house on various projects, while maintaining his creative independence. His breakthrough as a director was the 1995 “Neon Genesis Evangelion” TV series and subsequent theatrical films which became must-sees among international anime fans. He later branched out into live-action films, beginning with the 1998 “Love & Pop” and continuing with the 2004 cult hit “Cutie Honey.”

In 2006 Anno launched his own production company, Khara, which has worked on the projects of Anno, Miyazaki and other animators in various capacities.  His most recent pic as a director is yet another iteration of the “Evangelion” franchise, set for a 2015 release.  He also voiced the airplane designer hero of Miyazaki’s WWII-themed animation, “The Wind Rises.”
