Mumbai Mantra To Continue Without Sundance

HONG KONG – Mumbai Mantra, the Indian-themed screenwriting program, is to go solo, following the expiry of its relationship with the Sundance Institute.

The event is backed by Mahindra, the multinational Indian industrial conglomerate whose interests span from car-making to financial services and property development, and which was a backer of Julie Taymor’s adaptation of “The Tempest.”

The deal between Sundance and Mahindra sparked the Mumbai Mantra | Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in India and the Sundance Institute | Mahindra Global Filmmaking Awards, awarded annually at the Sundance Film Festival. Some 16 filmmakers were rewarded and 25 ‘screenwriting fellows’ attended the last 3 Screenwriting Labs. The deal expired after three years.

Instead, Mumbai Mantra will become CineRise 100 Storytellers, an 8-stage training, residential mentoring and pitching program backed by Mahindra. At its busiest point, the program will provide a two-day workshop for 100 screenwriters who are selected to take their film treatments to script stage.

The first of the new programs gets under way with a submission deadline in late August.
