‘Kundo’ is Rampant at Korean Box Office

HONG KONG – Historic action film “Kundo: Age of The Rampant” delivered a thumping win at the Korean box office this weekend.

Its 23.7 million (KRW24.3 billion) score was the biggest opening of the year so far, and came from fully 65% of all cinema traffic, according to the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS service.

With 2 million ticket sales generally considered the mark of a decent hit, the film’s 3.10 million spectator opening weekend instantly puts “Kundo” into blockbuster territory. The film, about a popular rebellion against privileged nobility, is directed by Yoon Jong-bin and financed and distributed by Showbox/ Mediaplex.

“Kundo” also flew past “How To Train Your Dragon 2,” which opened against it. “Dragon” managed a respectable 903,000 ticket sales, or 23% of the weekend box office, worth $6.09 million.

In Darwinian fashion, the pair of newcomers also outperformed “Dawn of the Planet of The Apes,” which caused upset in the Korean industry a few weeks ago by shifting its dates with only short notice. “Apes” managed a 322,000 spectators for $2.44 million, giving a cume of 3.78 million ticket sales or $29.1 million.

Korean film “The Divine Move,” in which the board game Go features prominently, continued to play a long game. It held fourth place with incremental ticket sales of 119,000 for a cumulative score of 3.50 million.

“Transformers 4” remained sixth in the charts, but, with less than 1% of the market, barely added to its 5.29 million ticket sales total worth a cumulative $42.9 million.
