Korean Hit-Makers to Host Seminar in Busan Market

HONG KONG — Film-makers behind South Korea’s string of recent blockbuster hits will convene at an event to be held as part of the Busan festival’s Asian Film Market.

Only those whose films have exceeded 10 million ticket sales within Korea are invited as speakers.

They include Kim Hanmin (producer at Big Stone Pictures, and director of “Roaring Currents”); Choi Yong-bae, president of Chungeoram Film, and producer of “The Host”); Youn JK, president of JK Film, and director of “Haeundae”); Kang Je-gyu, (director of “Taegukgi”); and Kang Woo-suk (chairman of Cinema Service, and director of “Silmido”).

Market organizers report that registrations for the market (Oct. 5-8) are booming, with sales booth bookings up by 150% and early badge registrations up 200%.

Other seminars to be organized by the market include a panel on Asian Star Casting for Global Co-Productions’ and a ‘Film Fund Talk’ involving publicly-run institutions from Europe, including Eurimages, Germany’s Medienstiftung NRW and France’s Institute Francais.

Participants at the talent and casting panel include representatives from China’s Huayi Brothers Management, and Easy Entertainment; Korea’s BH Entertainment, KeyEast, and JYP Entertainment; and Japan’s K-DASH. It will be followed by the Asian Stars Night, event and is intended to promote the casting of diverse actors during the Asian Film Market period. 

Another panel will focus on Busan and the surrounding region as an infrastructure hub for for international film location shooting.

Separately, the festival (Oct. 2-11) announced that it will put on a 12 film screening program dedicated to women film-makers from Georgia, the country that straddles Asia and Europe. Titles include “A Story of Mountainous Racha,” by pioneer Nutsa Gogoberidze, “Day is Longer than Night,” by her daughter Lana Gogoberidze, and “In Bloom,” by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross.
