Japan Box Office: ‘Doraemon’ Leads for 2nd Week

TOKYO — “Stand By Me Doraemon,” the 3D CG reworking of a long-running 2D animated series about a robot cat and his boy companion, earned $6.8 million on 503,000 admissions on the weekend (Aug. 16-17) to drive its cume to $31.8 million, while taking the BO top spot for the second weekend in a row. The pic is now expected to finish with $52 million.

Bowing in the number two slot was “Hot Road,” a Japanese drama about a teen girl’s love for a bad-boy biker in the 1980s, which opened with $3.9 million on 284,000 admissions. The popularity of lead Rena Nonen, fresh from her starring turn in the hit NHK drama “Ama-chan,” boosted the pic’s B.O., especially in the provinces.

Ranking in third was “Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno,” the first of a two-part samurai swashbuckler produced by Warner Entertainment Japan. The pic dropped just 19% from the previous weekend, while driving its cume to $31.1 million on 2.74 million admissions. This betters the take of the first “Rurouni Kenshin” picture, released in 2012, by 6%. The second part, “Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends,” opens on Sept. 13.
