Japan Box Office: ‘Doraemon’ Cartoon Trumps Tepid ‘Transformers 4’

TOKYO – “Transformers: Age of Extinction” entered the Japanese BO at number three for the weekend of August 9-10 with $4.75 million on 302,992 admissions and 760 screens. The three-day total for the fourth entry in the “Transformers” series, including Friday sneaks, was $5.1 million.

Japan was the last major territory to release the movie, which has already grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

The bow for “Transformers 4” was 15% lower than the first weekend B.O. recorded by the third part “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” in 2011. That went on to earn $41.6 million in Japan.

Leading the B.O. for the weekend was “Stand By Me Doraemon,” the first 3D CG entry in the long-running anime series about a robot cat and his boy companion. Opening on 319 screens, less than half of the total for “Transformers 4,” the local film scored $7.5 million on 554,911 admissions. Its three-day total was $9.7 million.

Last week’s number one, “Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno,” dropped to number two, while driving its cumulative to $19.1 million on 1,515,132 admissions.
