Hong Kong Box Office Climbs 11% in First Half of 2014

Local films perform strongly, but are beaten by Hollywood's superheroes

HONG KONG – Theatrical box office in Hong Kong grew by 11% in the first half of the year hitting HK$865 million ($110 million). That compares with $98.7 million in the first six months of last year.

Data from Hong Kong’s Motion Picture Industry Assn. shows that 134 imported movies were released and 25 Hong Kong-made pictures.

Hollywood dominated the rankings too, with the top six places going to U.S. productions and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” emerging on top with $7.30 million, narrowly ahead of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” with $7.06 million and “X-Men” with $6.51 million.

“Transformers: The Age of Extinction,” which was shot in the territory and had its world premiere here, emerged as the fourth biggest movie of the year with a gross of $5.61 million despite only its first four days grosses being counted in the January-June chart.

Hong Kong films also performed very strongly.

Locally made films took the seventh to 10th slots in the overall chart, edging out such juggernauts as “Godzilla” and “The Lego Movie.” In the period, nine Hong Kong-produced films reached over $1.29 million, the local mark of a hit, including four that made double that.

The local champions were led by comedy sex sequel “Golden Chicken SSS” (pictured) with $5.32 million; gambling comedy “The Man From Macau” with $4.32 million; fantasy reworking of a traditional Chinese tale “The Monkey King” on $3.30 million; and “Overheard 3,” a cop action drama that feeds directly into the heated local political climate, on $3.05 million.
