China’s ‘Black Coal’ Sells to StudioCanal for U.K. Release

“Black Coal, Thin Ice,” the Chinese thriller that won the Golden Bear in Berlin earlier this year, is to get a release in the U.K.

Rights to the film, which plays this week in the London Film Festival, were acquired by StudioCanal from Hong Kong- and Amsterdam-based Fortissimo Films. The Diao Yinan-directed picture is also the front-runner at the Golden Horse Awards, which take place in Taiwan next month.

Among Fortissimo’s other LFF titles “Theeb” was acquired by Cinemien for the Benelux territories and by Megacom for ex-Yugoslavia; while gay drama “Love Is Strange,” starring John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, was sold to Edko Films for Hong Kong and Filmware for Taiwan. “Love” releases early next year in the U.K. via Altitude Films.
