BUSAN: CJ Entertainment Announces Next Year’s Slate

CJ Entertainment, which is enjoying its biggest ever year at the box office, has unveiled another powerhouse slate for 2014-15.

Kicking off in December, it will release “Ode to My Father,” a big-budget drama that marks the return to directing of JK Yoon, who previously directed disaster movie “Haeundae” but has recently operated more as a producer. The picture stars Hwang Jung-min (“New World”), “Lost” star Kim Yunjin and Oh Dal-su (“The Attorney,” “The Thieves”).

Hwang also stars in two other major pictures for CJ. In July, the company will release Ryoo Seung-wan’s action thriller “The Veteran,” with Hwang and Yoo Ah-in; and Lee Seok-hoon’s climbing adventure “Himalayas,” with Hwang and Jung Woo.

At its party Saturday night, CJ also revealed Korean releases for the first two films emanating from the Vietnamese production slate it’s building in support of its CJ-CGV multiplexes and distribution operations in Vietnam. The two are “Let Hoi Decide,” a romantic comedy directed by Charlie Nguyen (to be released in December) and comedy adventure “Three Girls,” directed by Vo Tan Binh.

Similarly, CJ’s CEO Jeong Taesung unveiled planned Korean releases for two movies from its burgeoning Chinese production slate. It will give a first quarter release to Chang Yoon-hyun’s horror flick “The Peaceful Island,” starring Stanley Huang, Leon Dai and Jiao Yun Yan; and Leste Chen’s Chinese remake of family drama hit “Miss Granny.”

CJ is the Korean distributor for Paramount and DreamWorks Animation and will next year handle “Mission: Impossible 5,” “Terminator: Genisys,” “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge out of Water,” and “Kung Fu Panda 3,” among other titles.

Further out, thanks to its relationship with 1492 Pictures, CJ has the Chris Columbus-produced “Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt,” intended to appeal to South Korea’s substantial Christian community.
