Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ to get Cinelicious Release

"Lone Survivor" exec producer Adi Shankar to promote pic to digital fan base

HONG KONG – New specialty distributor Cinelicious Pics has picked up North American rights to “Gangs of Wasseypur,” the contemporary crime epic by Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap.

The two part film premiered in Cannes in 2012 in the festival’s Directors’ Fortnight section.

Cinelicious Pics expects to give the film a theatrical release in two parts later this year, with launches in Los Angeles and New York.

The film will be presented by U.S. Indian digital entrepreneur and movie producer Adi Shankar, whose 1984 Private Defense Contractors has backed “The Grey” and Peter Berg’s hit “Lone Survivor.”

Shankar, who also produces digital video content, will promote the film to his fans.

“I’m focusing on helping promote ‘Gangs’ at the moment to my audience and not sure if I’ll present more movies in the future. I’ll have to see what this experience is like,” Shankar told Variety. “I just really love ‘Gangs’ and feel that it’s an important movie so I’m doing everything I can to make sure it makes is mark state-side.”

The young Cinelicious Pics has so far released documentaries “Guiseppe Makes a Movie,” and “Elektro Moskva,” and feature “Metalhead.” Its temporary website says it will release four more films in 2014.

The Melrose Avenue-based shingle is the sister company of post-production services outfit Cinelicious.

Together they aim to acquire and restore foreign and art-house movies while the distribution arm handles theatrical, VoD, DVD, and 4k TV releases.

“Key ingredients include an eclectic mix of foreign and independent features & docs plus 4K-restored art house and cult classics, lovingly brought to pristine viewing quality by sister post & digital restoration studio,” says the site.

Kashyap, a leading screenwriter and director in India’s indie movement, became internationally known with “That Girl in Yellow Boots.” More recently he has become a prolific producer of other works by emerging talent. He was a producer of “The Lunchbox” and the recent hit “Queen.”
“Gangs” was released in two parts in India in June and August 2012.

His recent directorial effort “Ugly” screened at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and the New York Indian Film Festival.
