Allison Janney Buys Rehabbed Studio City House

BUYER: Allison Janney
LOCATION: Studio City, Calif.
PRICE: $3,250,000
SIZE: 4,829 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Let’s hope it’s a positive sign of change in the way corporate Hollywood typically puts middle-aged actresses out to showbiz pasture when they reach the ripe old aged of 35 or 40 but, in case any of y’all haven’t noticed, 55-year-old Allison Janney’s career is hotter than an August afternoon in Palm Springs.

The six-time Emmy winner — who can also claim five Golden Globe nominations plus a pair of Tony nominations for her stage work — killed it in a recurring role on the critically acclaimed “Masters of Sex” series earlier this year; co-stars opposite Anna Faris in the sitcom “Mom,” now in its second season; and has half a dozen film and television projects in various states of production, including a starring role in a feature-length adaptation of Joan Didion’s gripping and tightly wound novel “A Book of Common Prayer.”

So swears real estate yenta Yolanda Yakketyyak on her infant nephew’s baby toes, the famously statuesque veteran actress recently celebrated her ongoing professional success — well deserved in this property gossip’s inconsequential opinion — with an under-the-radar $3.25 million purchase of a freshly rehabbed residence in the hills above Studio City, Calif. Listing details and property records show the two-story residence in question, purchased via blind trust, sits on a reasonably roomy .6-acre parcel and has five bedrooms and five bathrooms in 4,829 square feet.

A long driveway curves down the hillside and gathers in a brick-accented concrete motor court in front of an over-sized three-car garage. Inside, glossy medium-brown hardwood floors run throughout the main living spaces that include a formal living room with vaulted exposed wood ceiling, wood-burning fireplace and a marble-topped built-in wet bar. There’s a wainscotted formal dining room as well as a second, less-formal dining space in the generously sky-lit kitchen and lounge area. The somewhat awkwardly angled kitchen has a double wide center island, white marble counter tops, a full complement of high-grade stainless steel appliances and — most lovely of all, perhaps — a raised fireplace.

There are four guest/family bedrooms, at least two of which appear to have direct access to bathing and ablution facilities. The upper-level master bedroom has a raised fireplace and a vaulted exposed wood ceiling and is complete with private balcony that overlooks the backyard and closet space fit for a regular red carpet walker like Miz Janney. The sky-lit master bathroom is finished with knotty pine paneling on the ceiling treatment and a highly graphic black and white tile floor and fitted with a marble-topped double sink vanity, a soaking tub and a separate glass-enclosed stall shower and — an unexpected bonus — a dry sauna.

Sliding glass and French doors open several rooms on the main floor to the pancake flat section of the backyard that includes a long covered porch, a small deck off the kitchen dining area, a swimming pool and spa and a walled sunbathing deck cantilevered over the hillside. A planted garden slopes down below the pool and includes a small pond and bench for quiet contemplation (or whatever).

This property gossip’s research shows that Miz Janney and an investor partner lost an allegedly celeb-pedigreed house in Palm Springs to the hungry jaws of foreclosure a couple of years ago and further research reveals she continues to own a 1,925-square-foot house in Studio City that she purchased in May 2001 for $799,000.

I just returned from Yolanda’s nephew’s bris, mazel tov; the baby still has ten toes. And the master bedroom ceiling isn’t very feng shui-friendly.

Fresh and bright, albeit a little to much geometry for me.

While a tad too white, there are some nice interior spaces and features (I too love a raised fireplace in the kitchen). But for some reason I find the exterior ineffably sad.

Great blast from the past re: the Palm Springs foreclosure — I’d almost forgotten (mercifully) average joe.
