The six-episode series, slated to hit all Netflix territories worldwide in 2015, marks the first animated series by Gaumont’s U.S. production arm, tapping the expertise of Gaumont Animation in France.
“F Is for Family,” created by Burr (pictured, above) and Michael Price (“The Simpsons”), follows the Murphy family in the 1970’s. Burr will voice the role of Frank Murphy, the family’s extreme patriarch; Laura Dern will voice Frank’s wife, Sue; and Justin Long (“The Break-Up,” “Live Free or Die Hard”) voices the family’s oldest son, Kevin.
“Bill Burr’s stand-up specials are wildly popular for us worldwide, and we’re looking forward to presenting his nostalgic and unflinching take on the family comedy in this original, animated series,” Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content, said in a statement.
“F Is for Family” is executive produced by Burr, Vince Vaughn (“Art of Conflict,” “The Break-Up,” “Couples Retreat”), Peter Billingsley (“Dinner for Five,” “Couple’s Retreat”) and showrunner Michael Price. Michael Lagnese and Victoria Vaughn from Wild West Television are co-executive producers on the series.
Separately, Netflix will exclusively debut Burr’s “I’m Sorry You Feel That Way” stand-up special Dec. 5. Two of Burr’s prior concerts are streaming on Netflix: “You People Are All the Same” and “Let It Go.”
In addition to his stand-up, Burr has appeared in movies including “Date Night,” “The Heat,” “Stand Up Guys,” “Walk of Shame” and in AMC’s series “Breaking Bad.” Burr is repped by APA and 3 Arts Entertainment.
“‘F Is for Family’ is the show I’ve always wanted to do. It captures all the characters of my childhood the way I remember it to be,” Burr said in a statement provided by Netflix. “Fortunately Mike Price and everyone at Wild West seem to know the same people I knew growing up. It’s going to be a lot of fun to tell these stories.”
Gaumont also produces Netflix’s “Hemlock Grove” thriller from horror-meister Eli Roth, as well as original drama series “Narcos” about the infamous Medellín Cartel in Colombia set to debut on the streaming service in 2015.
“Bill Burr’s voice in capturing the moment to moment comedy in our daily lives is infectious and relatable,” said Katie O’Connell, CEO of Gaumont International Television. “We’re thrilled to bring his hilariously edgy style of comedy to ‘F Is for Family’ with our partners at Wild West Television.”
