3D conversion company Legend3D to open

3D conversion company planning education-production plant

3D conversion company Legend3D has started construction on a new production hub in Hollywood.

Legend3D hopes the L.A. hub, scheduled to open in March, will be a “one-stop shop” for finishing movies. The new facility, at 1017 Cole Avenue, will include a RealD review theater, editorial suites and a technology lab with stereo conform and stereo grading capabilities. It will be home to 10 to 12 full-time employees.

Carlsbad, Calif.-based Legend3D has done 3D conversion for pictures including, “Man of Steel,” “The Smurfs 2,” and “Metallica Through the Never.”

“One of our primary goals behind breaking new ground in L.A. is to ensure we are easily accessible for creative collaboration with filmmakers and studio clients and this facility will enhance that accessibility,” said Tom Sinnott, Legend3D chief operating officer.

Executive producer Matt Akey will be the senior executive at the new Hollywood branch. He heads up the company’s domestic and international sales initiatives, as well as liaising with studio clientele on show-related updates. Supporting his efforts is Stephanie Winslow, director of business development, whose primary focus will be new business and maintaining strong relationships with studio and production partners. Winslow was previously a stereo production supervisor at Legendary Pictures.

This new facility will be used for 3D conversion, reviews, seminars and educational events for industry professionals. Legend3D’s goal is to educate producers and directors about the advantages of 3D conversion. They will hold conferences and host speakers who will share experiences with on-set stereo supervision, according to Akey.

Legend opened a facility in Carlsbad in 2013 with capacity for more than 400 artists and creative supervisors. Currently, the headcount is 325.  The Hollywood and Carlsbad offices will be able to work together through a 10 gigabit pipe for real-time data transfer.
