‘Hobbit,’ ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay,’ ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Top YouTube Trailers Chart for Q3

Leading up to their late-2014 premieres, Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” and Warner Bros.’ “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” had the most-viewed paid trailers on YouTube during the third quarter, followed by sexual thriller “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

The official trailer for the final movie in the “Hobbit” trilogy drew 17.3 million views in the period, while two separate “Hunger Games: Mockingjay” trailers had 15.4 million and 13.7 million views for a combined total of 29.1 million. Universal’s “Fifty Shades of Grey,” slated for a February 2015 bow, notched 14.6 million views for its trailer.

Those films topped YouTube’s ranking of most popular official brand-produced trailers of movies, TV shows and videogames with paid promotion between July 1 and Sept. 30.

Over all, there were 107 million views for the top 10 paid trailers on YouTube in the third quarter, up from 93 million in Q2. Average view duration of the videos was 1 minute, 34 seconds (representing 77% of the full length of the video on average). Most videos on the Q3 list are 2 minutes or longer, showing that studios and game publishers continue to see value in releasing extended trailers online.

According to a September survey Google conducted with Millward Brown Digital, about 80% of moviegoers who use video sites to look for more information about a film visit YouTube. The study polled 1,575 consumers who had planned to see a movie in theater in the past six months.

The top 10 fall trailers on YouTube, for the three months ended Sept. 30:

6. “The Walking Dead: Season 5” – 10,018,850 views

7. “Destiny” Live Action Trailer (“Become Legend”) – 9,907,838 views

8. “Finding Fanny” – 5,701,143 views

9. “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” – 4,793,127 views

10. “Taken 3” – 4,627,059 views
