Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s cover for the April issue of Vogue was promptly panned by critics Friday morning but the fashion magazine’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour,’ said the decision was for “good reason.”

Wintour, who has been editing the magazine since 1988, wrote that Vogue’s long-held tradition is “being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it.”

“There’s barely a strand of the modern media that the Kardashian Wests haven’t been able to master,” she wrote in an open letter.

Critics were quick to denounce the issue Friday with blog The Fashion Law tweeting “Dear #Vogue, there is a difference between controversial and classless. Learn it.”

Even “Buffy” star Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t having it: “Well, I guess I’m canceling my Vogue subscription,” the actress tweeted.

Meanwhile, Nikki Finke, former editor-in-chief of Deadline, wasn’t as nice:

Others called out Vogue for succumbing to West’s demands.

The rapper, 36, had urged the magazine to consider his reality star fiancee in an interview Ryan Seacrest last October.  “There’s no way Kim Kardashian shouldn’t be on the cover of Vogue,” he said, claiming she was more influential than first lady Michelle Obama in her clothing choices.

But Wintour insists the rapper never “begged” her to put the infamous reality star on its cover.

“He did nothing of the sort,” she wrote. “The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”

Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, the cover shows Kardashian wearing a white wedding-style dress with West’s arms around her and the hashtag ‘World’s Most Talked About Couple’ underneath.

“Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that.”

Kardashian immediately posted the cover on her official Twitter and Instagram accounts Friday morning saying: “This is such a dream come true!!!” West wrote “Thank you @voguemagazine” on his Twitter account.

  1. Jilian Westen says:

I have long believed that Anna Winotur has far too much perceived power in the fashion industry. The inside workings of Vogue reveal that the real talent, taste and editorial promise is all around her, she simply takes credit for everything. That magazine would be far less without Grace Coddington, who is the gifted one. Putting West and Kardashian on the cover indicates once again that Winotur has outlived her usefulness as Editor and Chief. Her judgement is extremely flawed, as she sees herself as a celebrity, as opposed to who she is, the editor of a fashion magazine with far too much power. She should be replace with some fresh new talent.

  2. salliesweet says:

Vogue has stooped to such a new low…the Kardashians are in no way synonymous with high (or low) fashion so they are doing themselves no favors by featuring such trash on the cover as Kanye and Kim. They should start expecting to lose subscribers and start displaying their magazines near the National Enquirers for sale.

  3. Amy says:

So I Guess Vogue is now featuring Porn Stars on its cover! I am DISGUSTED That Vogue would feature this CLASSLESS,NASTY,TRASH on the cover. Just shows how morally bankrupt this society has become. It is TRULY SICKENING when a woman who is nothing more than a common WHORE is held up in such a high regard and makes millions off the ignorance and amoral and unintelligent of this country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Sally says:

Looks like now even VOGUE has gone the way of trashy! Kim Kardashians claim to fame was and ALWAYS will be trash! Sex tape, Playboy “W”magazine nude in silver paint, busting out of too tight, low cut and TASTELESS clothing. THAT is in Vogue amd classy?? She has NO other talents! Strength and character?? Joke! She is controlled by her greedy, fame/money/attention addicted momager who has no other talents herself! I will never look at Vogue again, it has just been bought and cheapened by the West, Jenner and Kardashian trash. I do hope her little daughter gets to see all her mommys sex tape and nude pictures she did for her and grammies greed and love of fame, money and attention. Someone should tell Kim she is NOT AND NEVER WILL BE her idol, Elizabeth Taylor!! Sad!

  5. Outrage unjustified & demented says:

It’s just astounding that white America has the time and the audacity to be offended by this couple appearing on the cover of a fashion magazine. Really, white people? Your so offended that this couple is on the cover of VOGUE that you have to organize protests, rallies, and cancel subscriptions. Amazing, the things white people get offended over. How about rallying and protesting when you see real injustice in the world, racial prejudices, black men being persecuted, maimed, and/or killed for nothing, African countries being exploited for their natural resources, black people being targeted while driving, shopping, etc. No, instead it’s let’s protest Kanye asking the head of VOGUE to put his wife on the cover. UNBELIEVEABLE, that white people have the gall to go ape shit over something so trivial. Whether the editor cow tailed to Kanye’s request or not, why should that make a hill of beans to anyone especially to a celebrity like Sarah Michelle Geller. I guess people should cancel subscriptions to magazines that she may appear on in the future, or maybe we should boycott watching her show. It must be nice to not have important, life changing events to boycott such as segregation in the South, and discrimination based on race that still exists all over America. It must be nice to win nominations for Emmys and Oscars just because you’re white and not because you delivered a powerhouse performance in an amazing film or tv show. African American actors/actresses/celebrities unfortunately aren’t extended such latitude. How about white people make themselves useful and protest, boycott, and wail against all the filth and obscenities being put into film, tv, and magazines. How about that? And you got to wonder how many millions of white people sit around watching filth and garbage all the time ON TV, ON THEIR COMPUTERS, AND IN FILM with no problems with it whatsoever, while bashing Kim & Kanye. HYPOCRITES! Thank GOD we all don’t behave like that. I wouldn’t want to have to face GOD knowing what a hypocritical lie I lived as a human being.

    • TJPhoto says:

Uh, is your name here supposed to be ironic or just incredibly insightful about your own commentary? It is precisely what your name describes: “outrage unjustified and demented”. It’s certainly true that there are much more heinous acts we could protest, and should protest, but yours is so racially based and extremist in rhetoric that it’s hard to see the validity in part of your rant.

  6. seahorselady says:

After reading Vogue for over 30 years, I will no longer even pick another one up. How can you even mention Kim and Kyle as styles of class? Kim’s claim to fame is a disgusting sex tape.
I will admit that both are super smart with making a buck and that’s it.
I find her to be well dressed trash and Kanye to be vulgar trash.
I’m certain that you will lose many customers who read your magazines to real about style.
I’m still in shock that you that you promoted such trash.

  7. Clarise79 says:

My Vogue subscription was cancelled after many, many years as I refuse to contribute to this disgusting porn star’s pocket in any way. Anna, how is that woman “A presence that shapes the world” ? She has done NOTHING to better this world, she’s a greedy, unscrupulous media whore who’s famous for releasing a personal sex tape to promote herself, who sees marriage as an advertising tool, who got pregnant while still married to another man, and didn’t she just sold herself for hundreds of thousands of dollars to be an old man’s date! The LA weekly and Craigslist has a section just for those type of services… But hey, if Snooki supports her then all of us must be wrong

  8. britta says:

A lot of people obviously don’t know how the fashion/media business works, even those who are in the fashion world themselves who are criticizing this issue. Anna Wintour is smart. Do you know how many billions of dollars the Kardashians have brought in from reality tv networks to perfume to clothes? Putting them on the cover is all about marketing and sales and if you pay attention you would understand women buy magazines based on what they see on the cover. This was a strategic marketing move. This is what the fame business is all about.

    • salliesweet says:

My mistake for expecting Vogue to be about the high fashion business and not need to sell out and reduce themselves to marketing by using trash. If I wanted to see those Twitter famous whores would purchase a different type of publication.

    • TJPhoto says:

Oh, savvy Britta, forgive us for not realizing this cover is about marketing and “the fame business” when foolishly we thought it was about a final assault on serious fashion and publishing integrity. We didn’t realize that the cover of Vogue is no different from the cover of People magazine or the National Enquirer. Some of us would like to hold out hope for a few outlets to retain integrity while still creating a viable product in the marketplace of cultural content. If you can’t draw a line, you’ve lost critical judgment.

    • maria says:

Britta, you seem to be just as much of a media whore as Anna Wintour, the PIG Kardashians, the Thug Kanye West, and the rest of the so-called “celebrities” who whore out their disgusting sex lives and their bad behavior for money. The concepts of role models, character, integrity, goodness, selflessness, charity and morals don’t seem to factor into your equation, which is why you and the “followers” of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are driving this country straight into HELL. There is nothing inside of West and Kardashian except filth and greed, and THAT, BRITTA, is why everyone is so OFFENDED.

  9. Sara says:

I think Wintour forgot that the magazine is about fashion and not social media, no talent, people.

  10. Karen says:

Well it is time to cancel my Vogue subscription. Kim is nothing but a porn star and her boyfriend is a thug. Vogue you have really sunk low to have these two on your cover.

  11. Kim says:

Two media whores on the cover of Vogue? Thank you editor for turning this publication into a tabloid rag. No one cares about a porn star and a raging bi-polar psycho. The reason people talk about them is because they are so highly overrated and despised.

  12. tree says:

A sad day for Vogue, Kim K is know for being a Prostitute, what were you thinking, the dress needed a color, to cover the Piss Stains.

  13. kermit/miss piggy says:

Anna They are the most talked about couple because people despise them. Conde Nast is Anna W boss there is a petition out their to fire Anna. The KarTRASHians will buy thousands of vogue mag. and say see we are famous- Kim is nothing but a PAID prostitute, I guess being a porn star doesnt pay enough

  14. maria says:

Yes, Kanye West IS a thug! And a Bully. And a Racist!!!! Based on his treatment of Taylor Swift alone, he qualifies for all three of those titles!! If you want to add the N-word to that, feel free!!

    • Zee says:

You’re calling him a racist when you just said that it was okay to call him the N-word. STFU you racist scum. People like you are what’s wrong with this country. You dislike a black person and you promote calling them the N-word.

Boo-hoo for Taylor swift. I always knew her fans were sucky people.

  15. Zee says:

*hypocrisy of the people on here

    There was an autocorrect typo

  16. Zee says:

So sexuality is what makes her ammoral? I find the hypostyle of the people commenting on here astounding. You all probably suck and hump as much as she does, and you probably record it, yet you want to label her a whore because Ray J leaked it. I don’t like Kim or Kanye, but this condemnation of sexuality is dumb. It’s not a direct reflection of one’s character.

If you don’t like her, awesome. But don’t hold women to higher standards than men sexually. No one counts a man’s sexual partners, but they feel the need to judge a woman on hers.

    • Karen says:

I have seen some of the scenes of her tape. It is a bit more than what most people tape in their bedroom. Ray J didn’t leak it, she did. She is famous for letting a man PEE ON HER FACE. She is a whore.

      • Zee says:

And the man who “peed” on her face isn’t a whore? You validated my previous statement with your attempts to categorize what is/isn’t acceptable sexual behavior for a woman to engage in and what’s crossing the line for her to tape. You admitted yourself that other people record themselves… And it typically takes two people to make a sex tape, so why aren’t you shaming the man who released it as well? Ray jay is a “whore” too.

  17. connie says:

Well, the day has come, I lost all respect and admiration for Vogue.

HATE!!! the cover with Kim and Kanye. Hate even typing their names.

They are the poster couple of everything we try not to be along with money hungry stupidity.

I do like the cover version with James Franco and Seth Rogen, I would have bought that one!

Vouge lost it’s class, edge and vision.

  18. B. Clinton says:

You have destroyed the credibility of your once fine magazine. Are you now competing with Hustler??? A thug and a slut on your legendary cover. I can smell the ocean from here.

    • Voice of Reason says:

Kanye West might be an idiot and annoying, but a thug? Is this just the term people get to apply to all black people now because they can’t use that other word?

  19. Gabrielhues says:

IMO Vogue has just sunk to the bottom of the list with the other tabloid rag magazines. I cancelled my subscription and would even be embarrassed if my postman delivered this trash to my home any longer. Overreaction, I don’t think so.

  20. Veronica says:

“Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight” => ?!!!

Does it mean everyone with sex tape can have a vogue cover?

  21. Kaylan says:

It will ruin my collection but I refuse to buy this issue lol
    Classless couple…..gross

  22. maria says:

VOGUE USA needs to shut down. But there is a possibility that the magazine is looking for a whole new demographic, the uneducated and the amoral, who actually believe that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have some sort of strength or goodness or character inside of them. They are NOT “a happy family” as one commenter said. They are SHAMELESS, AMORAL, DISGUSTING SELF-PROMOTERS and the WORST of role models to the young people who watch their shows and buy their videos and worship at the altar of their bad taste. These will be the future readers of VOGUE.

  23. TJPhoto says:

We shouldn’t be surprised by the repulsive sight of TMZ’s darling couple on the cover of American Vogue, and it’s only natural that Anna W’s indulgence in celebrity worship would eventually sink to these dank depths. But this ultimate callow celebration of empty-headed celebrity reeks nevertheless. Pairing the no-talent vanities of a Kardashian with the aggressive self-promotion of a Kanye West, all glory to this swamp of cultural decline.

But adding insult to atrocity, Queen Wintour has the gall to defend this debacle by rhapsodizing about how “charming and touching” the cover is, how Kardashian’s “strength of character…and real guts” impress her, and how West is “an amazing performer and cultural provocateur”. (Stop laughing! She’s dead serious, or just brain dead.) All of this spoken by the Queen with a straight face hidden behind sunglasses as dark as a bottomless pit.

After a lost decade or so scraping the bottom, American Vogue found a way to further degrade itself. It wasn’t enough that the superficial and undistinguished has characterized both fashion and the photographic depiction of it in this US edition for many years, while its foreign titles carried the Vogue weight with editorial content of a more challenging vision. But then, this conception of fashion and mindless celebrity as permanently entwined has nothing to do with art or vision, so a serious reader turned away long ago.

    • Gabrielhues says:

Well said. Anna thinks she can force feed the American public this trash and they will accept it, but I think she is quickly finding out that we, the public will fight back and not buy the garbage, Regardless what her opinions are.

    • KK says:

Could not have said it better myself!!

  24. 15 yr Vogue subscription canceled-April issue will be fittingly donated to local rescue shelter to line litter boxes & cages

  25. Noclass says:

The Kardashians will BUY Thousands and thousands of Vogue magazines just to show they R famous. And say hey, look at us. Money can’t buy Class Kim

  26. al says:

    what trash!!
im cancelling my vogue!! she is a trampy video person who showed the world where her mouth has been and doing

  27. Jeanne Marks says:

It is such a travesty to see KK on your cover, in a wedding gown, yet! She has already been married twice, is know primarily for her sex tape, and a show that is so immoral it is not to be believed.. They are all promiscuous and it is glorified. She should have married when she found out she was pregnant to at least give the impression she was serious about her relationship, rather than wait for a big payday , and a televised wedding. I HAVE GROWN CHILDREN WHO HAVE STOPPED WATCHING THE SHOW A WHILE AGO AFTER IT GOT TIRESOME TO SEE NOTHING BUT SEXUAL SITUATIONS AND BEHAVIOR,even condoned by the mother and step-father. I have a 23 year old grandddaughter living with me that says she will not even buy Vogue anymore because this promotion of KK and KW
has put Vogue in a “tabloid like” category. We’ll stick with fashion magazines that are classier.

  28. Robb7 says:

Well, the fact that Anna Wintour had to publicly defend her cover decision speaks volumes. KW was quite vocal that KK should have a Vogue cover. He was relentless in his pursuit of this goal. The irony is KK is a twice-divorced woman who hated her pregnancy and is rarely seen with her child — so much for celebrating the family! And KK’s “strength of character” was amply displayed in her “golden shower” sex tape, millions of selfies featuring her ginormous posterior. Add to that her skin-tight ensembles = zero sense of fashion and you have another Vogue fashion icon!! Really, Anna??!!!

  29. Other celebs are allready starting to spoof the Vogue cover photo. Check out this one by Seth Rogen: http://stunx.com/seth-rogen/photo/447238943742775296
Even Miss Piggy and Kermit have a nice parody on this cover photo ;-)

    • Belmon says:

^^ That is amazing! Seriously, Wintour’s defense of the cover implies that pretty much anyone who shows up on TV can aspire to be in their cover. It looks very tacky and banal. Vogue’s covers should mean some more, be more special.

  30. MK says:

It’s cute all the hate you people have. If seeing a happy family in a magazine upsets you, then you should probably reevaluate your life and go ahead and deal with your childhood trauma. Keep your private life private. Hating a family in magazine puts all of YOUR personal business it there.

In he meantime, Vogue magazine did what iconic magazines do…put icons on it’s cover. Love them or hate them they’re icons. But I hear ya. Keep building your self esteem by shooting down others. It looks good on all of you, nameless people talking trash in comments lol.

Guess how much Kim and Kanye care? About as much as Vogue does lol.

    • KK says:

What are you smoking? Iconic for what? If you think they are iconic then that say’s who you are. They put themselves out there and up there for criticism.
People are upset because Vogue put a trashy couple on there. Have you seen Kim’s sex tape?
She’s low class. And here’s a message for Kanye: Sorry Kanye but Taylor Swift had the best selling
      Vogue Cover of all time.

    • Ruth says:

Anna Wintour comments: Vogue’s long-held tradition is “being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it.”

If KK and her gangsta boyfriend define culture in the year 2014, then heaven help us all. This cover lowers Vogue to the level of the cheapest reality shows represented by the Kardashians and others. The fact that they have made a great deal of money from their trashy show doesn’t mean that this is “culture” or even something to aspire to. It just means that large sections of Western society still watch the lowest form of entertainment, a cheap insult to the many real performers who offer genuine talent in countless shows.

  31. Boston says:

Just hope that this will be a turning point in how the American social media has allowed itself to be manipulated and directed by people who have no apparent respect for it, or the American people. Vogue Magazine could be the loser here, hope they understand what they’ve done to themselves.

  32. BanVogue says:

Vogue has set women rights back 20 yrs.We Had self respect Putting Kim on cover who is famous for a Sex Tape and half naked selfies has degraded women. through her strength of character REALLY Anna, Kim’s character comes out when she made the sex tape, phones the paparazzi every time she goes out. No Talent, NO Class, No Morals she manipulates the media

  33. Barbie Gayle says:

A poor attempt to cover a bad mistake that I am sure Anna Wintour is now regretting privately. It’s one thing to get press for being controversial but if you risk the loss of subscribers (which are hard to retain and we all know less subscribers = less advertisers) is it really worth it in the end? You have gotten attention but it’s not great if you have to defend the cover.

  34. Laura says:

Kim and Kanye?????? Too bad you caved, thought you had higher standards Ms. Wintour.

  35. maria says:

They are the most classless, nasty, amoral couple I can think of!! I will NEVER pick up or subscribe to VOGUE magazine again. This makes me nauseous!! What a disservice to young people everywhere to put these two awful, talentless people on the cover of a once major magazine. Anna Wintour should be forced to retire over this!! How Disgusting!

  36. Asta says:

“ Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that.” Why does it? She created the glare herself by following her bff at the time PH formula for being famous. Have a sex tape released where you are being peed on and do a reality show. She just took it a step further… have a sham marriage, get pregnant with another man’s baby while still married and be an unwed mother. Do absolutely no charitable work and if they did we’d know about it, and release half naked selfies. That comment reminds me of the joke of the man who killed his parents and threw himself on the mercy of the court because he was an orphan.

  37. GreatDragon says:

EVERYBODY……..do NOT buy the April issue of Vogue!!!!!!! nauseating, disgusting, lower class rag-mag. When no one buys the issue then maybe they will pay attention to customers?????

  38. Maddy says:

It seems quite ironic to put someone with zero fashion sense on the cover of a “high” fashion magazine. Kim consistently looks terrible in most of the clothes she wears. Everything looks two sizes too small. The cropped tops and peplum skirts she wears do not do her any favors. I guess Anna Wintour has decided to make American Vogue another celebrity tabloid rag.

  39. Debbie Valenta says:

I didn’t know magazines could jump the shark.

  40. Bloggin says:

The kardashians are man eating…. brand killers… The public hates them but the media loves shoving them in your face! It’s amazing they get so much publicity but they repulse the majority of the American public and the media machine keeps on trying them. Successful minority trying to be cool men and gold/fame diggers.
The Kardashians soil the men careers while boosting their own person .. look at the reaction that people are having to vogue. It’s not good! How much credibility has Vogue lost putting those two on the cover… We know magazine sales are struggling but the cover screams desperation by Vogue and America media to try to stay relevant in a culture and society that they are starting to seem really foreign too.
Her dress is beautiful but the fact that American media keeps promoting these type of women and men shows how the mighty have fallen.
