Variety magazine journalists, articles and graphic design have been nominated for 28 SoCal Journalism Awards given by the Los Angeles Press Club.
New York film editor Ramin Setoodeh is nominated for Journalist of the Year in the Print Under 50,000 circulation category, while editor in chief-TV Cynthia Littleton is nominated for Entertainment Journalist of the Year.
Numerous articles that ran in Variety’s first year as a glossy weekly magazine were recognized with SoCal Journalism Award nominations. They include Ted Johnson’s “Runaway Hollywood” cover story interview with Eric Garcetti and Nick Vivarelli’s story on Al Jazeera in the News Investigative category and David Cohen and Dave McNary’s “Force of Gravity” cover story on Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” in advance of its Toronto Film Festival premiere.
Brian Lowry received four nominaitons in the Feature/Commentary categories, including his commentary “TV’s Brave Nude World” in the “The Hard Sell” issue on sex in Hollywood. In the Personality profile category, Cynthia Littleton’s “The Gospel of Mark” on Mark Burnett and Jenelle Riley’s profiles of both Christian Bale and Spike Jonze were recognized. Scott Foundas was nominated for his article on director Justin Lin in the Entertainment news or feature category, as was Marc Graser for “Mattel Takes the Wheel.”
In the entertainment criticism category, the awards recognized Andrew Barker’s review of “Grown-Ups 2” and Justin Chang’s “American Hustle” review. Variety‘s full-issue deep investigation into Violence & Entertainment was recognized in the In-house or corporate publications category. Several online critical essays recognized were nominated, including Chang’s columns on “12 Years a Slave” and “Prisoners” and Scott Foundas’ “Why ‘The Counselor’ Is One Of Ridley Scott’s Best Films.”
Variety’s art department including Creative Director Chris Mihal, Director of Photography Bailey Franklin and Art Director Cheyne Gateley received numerous nominations along with the features’ photographers, including Feature Photo for “The Hard Sell” and “Power of Women,” Portrait for Ben Stiller and “Force of Gravity” and Photo Essay for the Oscar Nominees Portrait Gallery.
Other nominees were Steve Gaydos for his remembrance of Peter O’Toole, “The Night I Was Kissed By Lawrence Of Arabia,” and Andrew Wallenstein for two headlines.
