Matt Bean will oversee all editorial operations of the magazine, reporting to Jess Cagle, former EW editor who was recently named editorial director for People and Entertainment Weekly.
Bean’s appointment comes amid a top-level editor shuffle of Time Inc. properties as the publishing unit prepares to be spun off from the Time Warner mothership later this year.
Bean most recently served as managing editor of SportsIllustrated.com. He’s credited with launching the SI Now daily live talkshow and for spearheading the SI.com/LongForm initiative that mined the magazine’s archives for deep-dive material.
The appointment of an editor with a strong digital background is a telling sign of what Time Inc. leaders see as the future for EW, at a time when most print magazines are seeing contraction in advertising pages.
“Matt’s arrival is a testament to Time Inc.’s confidence in EW. He is a uniquely talented editor well-suited to this unique brand,” Cagle said in announcing the appointment.
“Jess has built Entertainment Weekly into an incredible brand over the past five years, and we’re going to continue the bold pursuit of big ideas across all platforms under my watch,” Bean said.
