Sony Will Add Female Superhero to Spider-Man Universe

Executives at Sony have seen renderings for a female-driven superhero film that takes place in the Spider-Man universe — which several have called a passion project for co-chairman Amy Pascal.

Although the script, penned by Lisa Joy, has yet to reveal which female character the film will center on, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach have already signed on to produce. The film, which could focus on Black Cat, Silver Sabler or Dazzler, to name a few possibilities, has not yet been dated.

A 2017 release date makes sense, considering “The Sinister Six,” directed by Drew Goddard and focusing on some of the villains in Peter Parker’s world, is in 2016 and “The Amazing Spider-Man 3,” directed by Marc Webb, was pushed to 2018.

Female-driven superhero films are having a moment in Hollywood, with Marvel announcing a female Thor, and “Lucy,” starring Scarlett Johansson, besting “Hercules” at the box office.

Rumors have already began to swirl about another female-centric property: Black Widow. “Guardians of the Galaxy” screenwriter Nicole Perlman took to Twitter Monday to clarify her involvement with the Marvel character.

Which is a shame..because Elektra is AWESOME!!

  2. cmackdadon says:

Correction: It’s “Silver Sable”, not Silver Sabler. And I think she would be the best bet as Black Kat would be too similar to Catwoman, as the character always has been. Even her relationship to Spidey is similar to the relationship between Batman and Catwoman. However they did introduce Felicia Hardy in the most recent Spidey flick so it would be logical to go with someone who’s already been cast instead of creating a new role.
Either way, if it’s made the same way that the Amazing Spider-Man series has, we can look forward to it being as lame as Elektra with Jeniffer Garner.

  3. John Petrarca says:

John, It would probably be Black Cat as she was mentioned in the last movie, but would like to see Silver Sable or Black Widow, though both have ties to Marvel. If I’m not mistaken the Black Widow use to fight along, and seem to have a love interest with DareDevil!!!

  4. Kol Drake says:

They might even introduce the newest ‘spider’ character, Silk. The female who was secretly bitten by the same spider that chomped on Peter Parker. At least then, it would be ‘in’ the Spider-Man Universe but allow for new creative direction instead of rehashing the same 2-3 story lines over and over again.

  5. Julia says:

We need Lucy Lawless to be reinvigorated as the oor female super hero, I like Scarlet Jonhanssons job, but hey let other actress to be on the spot too!

  6. Chelsea says:

Awesome, bring more girl power Sony.

  7. Keith says:

Dazzler is primarily x-men, so sony would not have the rights. Silver Sable would likely not be considered a Spider-man character and her rights would default to Marvel. The females that are possible would be Black Cat, Jackpot, Menace, Spider Woman (though she may be considered avengers related), or spider girl (either his daughter from the future or the current one). Logically, Black Cat is the only one that makes sense, especially since we had a teaser of her in the last movie.

  8. Jim says:

“Female-driven superhero films are having a moment in Hollywood, with Marvel announcing a female Thor, and ‘Lucy,’ starring Scarlett Johansson, besting ‘Hercules’ at the box office.” Marvel is making a female Thor in the comics….not the movies. “Lucy” got pretty bad reviews from both critics and filmgoers. It had a decent opening weekend because nothing else good came out that weekend, but it’s not exactly taking the world by storm. As for the Dazzler comment, there’s a big question whether Sony could even use Dazzler as she was primarily associated with the X-men and Fox owns their movie rights. There may be some cross-over with Spider-man but probably not enough for Sony to be able to use the character in films.

  9. Arthur Greenwald says:

I believe Marvel has announced a female Thor ONLY in the comics, with no plans to change the gender or casting for the present big screen God of Thunder played by Chris Hemsworth.

  10. big daddy D says:

Silver Sabler?? You don’t read many comics..do you, Ms. Cheney? It’s Silver Sable. My choice would be her or Black Cat. I love Dazzler, but that character is SO disco are. I don’t think she’d fit in. Black Widow feature. .I’m all for it. Female Thor..not so much.
