Busan And Tokyo Avoid Festival Dates Clash

Red carpet

HONG KONG – The Tokyo International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival have set dates for their October events that are nearly two weeks apart.

Tokyo today announced that its 27th edition will run Oct. 23-31, 2014.

But, in an unusual move, its TIFFCOM market will kick off two days before the festival, on Tues. Oct. 21. The market will finish in time for the festival’s opening ceremony on Thurs. Oct. 23. TIFFCOM will again be held in the Grand Pacific Le Daiba hotel venue in the harbor, where it has been located for the past two years.

Busan last week said that its event will run Oct. 2-11, 2014, while its Asian Film Market kicks off on Sunday Oct. 5, running through to Oct. 8.

While in some years there has been a gap of only a few days between the two major Asian film festivals, 2014 will see a gap of 12 days between the end of Busan and the beginning of Tokyo. Even with the early start to the Tokyo market, executives will have a 10 day break between the end of the Busan festival and the beginning of TIFFCOM.
