World Cup Fever Boosts 'FIFA' Game

Video game industry sees 24% increase in revenue from new hardware, software and accessories during the month

Ubisoft’s “Watch Dogs” may have been the top selling video game in June, but Electronic Arts may have seen the biggest sales bump thanks to the World Cup.

The company’s “FIFA” soccer franchise ranked in the top 10 for the first time this year because of the matches taking place in Brazil.

FIFA 14,” which launched in September 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and in November for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, came in at No. 5, while “FIFA World Cup: Brazil,” landed in the 12th spot, according to NPD Group.

The month’s five top-selling games pretty much mirrored the list in May, with “Watch Dogs” taking the No. 1 position, followed by Nintendo’s “Mario Kart 8,” “Minecraft,” EA’s “UFC,” and EA’s “FIFA 14.”

The video game industry saw an overall uptick in sales of new games, hardware and accessories in June.

Overall, revenue rose 24% for the biz, to $736 million. Hardware hauled in $293 million, a gain of 106%, while software sold $287 million, down 3%. NPD only tracks the sale of new software, which typically represents 50% of sales.

Much of the month’s growth was attributed to a 106% surge in hardware sales, and 1% gain in accessories, versus the same frame in 2013.

Although it didn’t provide specific sales figures, Microsoft said it doubled the sales of its Xbox One gaming console in June due largely to a price decrease after it started selling new versions without the Kinect motion and voice control sensor.

NPD found that combined sales of Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 are over 80% higher than the combined totals for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation.
