79 Original Songs to Compete for Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 79 original songs will contend for the 2014 Oscar.

That’s a slight jump from last year’s 75. The list will be winnowed down to five contenders when Oscar nominations are unveiled Jan. 15.

This year’s eligible list includes includes tunes from animated films (e.g., “Everything Is Awesome” from “The Lego Movie”), documentaries (“I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from “Glen Campbell … I’ll Be Me”), small-scale works (“Lost Stars” from “Begin Again”) and big epics (“The Last Goodbye” from “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” by Billy Boyd). The animated “Rio 2” has four eligible songs, and several films have three.

There is also an impressive roster of tunes from stars of the music world, including  Coldplay’s “Miracles” from “Unbroken”; Jonsi’s song “For the Dancing and the Dreaming” from “How to Train Your Dragon 2”; and “Yellow Flicker Beat,” Lorde’s contribution to the “Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1” soundtrack.

    Tim… it would have been nice to have given the writers of the song a credit in this list. Any reason why you did not to the writers of the 174 songs ?

      I agree, it would have been good. But I received the list from the Academy and they didn’t supply the writers. I had been compiling a list of potential Oscar songs, including writers, before the list came out today, but it was very incomplete. So it’s on my to-do list…just a little swamped right now. But thanks for asking, Tim
