TV Review: ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’

The Arsenio Hall Show review

Arsenio Hall's new show looks just like his old one. And that might be a pretty shrewd move

Although Arsenio Hall devoted his opening-night monologue to what he’s been up to for the last 19 years, the announcer wasn’t really joking by introducing the host as “back from a very long weekend.” That’s because “The Arsenio Hall Show,” inevitably and perhaps shrewdly, looks like a carbon copy of the syndicated show Hall left in 1994. And if you think about it, why not? In today’s fragmented TV universe, a series with a fraction of the audience Hall delivered in his heyday will likely be heralded as a success. So enter the new “Arsenio,” a touch wiser, perhaps, but essentially, same as the old one.

Hall’s most inspired gag was also the most obvious — enlisting Jay Leno, playing his shrink, to tell him if he works hard and does a good job, why shouldn’t he be able to host a latenight show for as long as he likes?

After that, though, the new venture — syndicated by CBS and anchored by the Tribune station group — made clear there’s no point in reinventing the wheel. Indeed, almost everything about Monday’s opener felt like the product of a time warp — a musical appearance by Snoop Dogg, light banter with guest Chris Tucker,  a walk-on endorsement from a spacey Paula Abdul.

Granted, the scripted bits were hit and (more often) miss, with so much time spent delving into the way-back machine as to become a trifle tedious. Then again, Hall can be somewhat forgiven for reveling in the moment, and his own enthusiasm — looking like someone genuinely happy to have this second shot — helped power through the clunkier elements.

Hall is in his 50s now, but that still puts him in good company in terms of older hosts chasing after a younger audience. (The crowd, naturally, was young, wildly appreciative and attractive — or at least, the women the camera kept finding were.)

The latenight landscape is far more diverse and crowded than when Hall made his initial splash — back when there was Johnny and not much else — but even that potentially plays to his advantage. For starters, the Tribune stations on which he airs were once local-news powerhouses and cash machines; today, not so much.

At its peak “Arsenio” was described as a free-wheeling party, and as often happens in the throes of middle age, it’s hard to find old friends to stay up and hang out. Fortunately, Hall doesn’t have to clear the old bar, or even match his booking power, to demonstrate that while he might not be the hippest guy in latenight anymore, Arsenio 2.0 can still emerge as a survivor.

  5. Well, it now looks like the first of the dominoes has fallen. After only four weeks on the air, executive producer Neal Kendall has stepped down. To me, it doesn’t look like a good sign. Sounds like maybe the show’s doomed.

  6. tom reed says:

    WELCOME BACK.

Give him a chance, Mary. I’m sure he’s getting lots of feedback, and I still hold out hope that he’ll use it, and keep things going in the right direction. I was a big fan back in the day. Still have my Chunky A. tapes. Stayed up for Nia Peeples and her “Party Machine”. I stayed up many an awesome night! He’ll be back. Give him time. He has friends from the old days, sure, but he’ll make new ones!

  10. MARY AGUILAR says:

  11. j flannery says:

This show is an embarrassment from start to finish.

  12. JP says:

Sorry but his new show is not funny! It is dry and lame. I love Leno and Letterman! I change it whenever it comes on. Arsenio seems unpracticed and not comfortable with what he is doing, not sure what happened!

  13. All right now, everyone? The show has run for 12 episodes now. What do you think? Will the show swim, or sink?

  14. Ryan says:

You want this to be good. I know, I do too. It’s just awkward and dry and seems like a bunch of unpopular 7th graders do the writing. There is a point in each show where Arsenio is asking vague and superficial questions of an uncomfortable and uninterested guest, and you wonder, has this show been on for 6 hours already? It’s nice that all his guests give him credit for launching their careers.
Maybe the Chew or the View or some other irrelevant daytime show could offer him work.

  15. Deb says:

This show sucks. Arsenio is not back, he never was. Shut this embarrassment, his big teeth, extra long fingers down NOW….

    • joyce madej says:

it’s nice that all of arsenio’s famous frhiends say nice thing about him. but to everyday people like myself -his show is terrible.it’s outdated it’s not funny.i don’t think he would be on if he hadn’t won ca. this show will be in reruns very soon

  16. Donna A Morrison says:

    please donot take letterman off

  17. tommy says:

Hey everone its arsenio hall …okay okay i know you guys have not been happy with my c list guests okay so here is the new revamped version…next week its the black dude who played booker on good times and also the kid who played jj s little brother, also scheduled is the entire cast of thats my mama, and a reunion show with the original cast from the movie vampire in broklynn…with musical guests ..gangsta g from the 1987 movie colors woof woof ..arsenio is in the houseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  18. tommy says:

Hi everyone its Arsenio, I have heard your comments and I will be upgrading my guest list,,,okay starting next week my new guests will be flava flav, the two black dudes who played lionel on the jefferesons, their mother weezie, georges mother mother jefferson, and my special guest from roots, the black dude who played kunta kinties brother on roots….arsenios in the house…woof woof..

  19. Zil says:

Good idea. I like the idea of guest monologue host. Maybe Arsenio could do 1 minute and have a good unknown host (or known) come out and do another minute or two. He needs some help. I am pulling for him…but hehas to help himself.

  20. tommy says:

Hey tracy, yeah I love arsenio hall honestly, back in the day he was cutting edge with really hip a list guests from that era, now it appears like everything concerning his show is B list. The set looks like they had just put it together, borrowed old used curtains, and essentially begged people on the street to be on the show like they do with the game shows in las vegas. The guests are a continual B list parade of back in the day stars, who act like they have not seen arsenio since, back in the day. Maybe his budget is really low, ex no limos, just cabs for the guests, sharing dressing rooms, beer instead of expensive wine for the guests, that kind of thing, I do love arsenio but i was expecting soooo much more, and with a high budget A list feel, in summary, like a guy taking you on a date and instead of a five star eatery, he pulls up into taco bell…lol have fun.

  21. Tracy Allen says:

Awwww… I was pulling for Arsenio but, after watching a few recorded episodes on my DVR, I just can’t watch anymore. This doesn’t look good. I hope I’m wrong and things take a drastic turn around but, for some reason, I find the show kind of boring and it feels “low-grade”. Maybe he can start having guest hosts for the monologue and he just do the interviews? I don’t know… sad face

  22. Zil says:

Very funny, Tommy. I agree he needs better guests. I also believe HE needs to get better joke writers. His jokes are B>>A>>>D. He also needs some help with his delivery of the jokes. He needs help. I can not wait though to see next week’s shows. I am hoping he got the messages that we all have sent and will be better.

  23. tommy says:

Hi everone its arsenio, you thought my guests where b list this week, you aint seen nothing yet ..woof woof join me next week when my guests will be lavar burton from roots, that black dude who played his brother..what the hell was his name, and the guy who played on barnie miller back in the 70s with musical guests, the ohio players, milli vanilli, and with a special appearence from the two black dudes who played trumpet with the band wild cherry in the 70s…woof woof..Still love you arsenio, just hope that you can upgrade the guests…..

  24. I just found out who the announcer is…Diana Steele, an LA radio personality. Overall, I’d say that the celebrity interviews aren’t the show’s only B-grade quality. I think it’ll be hard for Arsenio to compete with Leno/Fallon and Letterman—both of those shows have higher production budgets, due to their network backing.

  25. tommy says:

Okay kids I have stated that I am making a diary to watch arsenio halls new show called Life on the C list with an earnest attempt to watch this show until the bitter end when it finally gets cancelled with most of the new shows this fall..Seriously I love Arsenio back in the day, but this is what he has after 19 years on the sidelines?? Come on man where are the A listers brad pitt, tom cruise, the latest hip hop stars, seriously snoop dog,?? Hey its Arsenio join me next week when my guests will be Ice tea, Ice milk, Ice cube, and wait for it, Ice coffee…as well I am bringing back the cast of the cosby show, and wait for it…that black dude who played Lionel on the Jeffersons..woof woof woof…

  26. Sid says:

Haven’t these producers even looked at old videos of Arsenio’s show?? Take a look folks, he’s the worst talk show host in history. Horrible comedian with no timing whatsoever, the worst teleprompter reader in history, zero personality, excrutiatingly bad interviewer (are you supposed to mumble “yeah” after each statement your guest makes?). And all this was AFTER 5 YEARS OF PRACTICE!!! I have no idea what these fools are thinking. How his show made it 5 years is still a mystery to me.

    • tony says:

And yet someone wanted him back on the air. Go figure. Pretty much, if you didn’t like him the first time around, why bother watching the second time? If you dug his unusual style before, then you’re probably lovin’ it. There is no in-between with Arsenio. Maybe his show made it because he had on people no one else would have on. He didn’t go for the funny all the time, but he challenged people to think deep. Youtube the James Brown interview, for example. Lyle Alzado was another one. Apparently,

  27. pretty ricky says:

We need to hear more bass in the band. We barely hear the bass the player.. Please let them know to tell the bass player to pump it up..

    • ZIL says:

I think you are right about the bass. I knew there was something off in the sound. Even when Johnny Gil was singing…..the sound of the band was off a bit.

  28. tommy says:

majic johnson yeah his old buddies didnt even appear to really know him anymore..kinda like yeah arsenio ..where u been man….19 years is a long long time…you cant bring your a game from the nineties to the 21th century. The cutting edge guests you had are old, been there, and back in the day, young people have no idea who majic was, or lisa kudrow, or george lopez, unless you remember that terrible show he did have a few years ago, although the chicka who played his wife was smokin hot…yeah where is tom crusie brad pitt, jerel leto, ect ect..not ice cube and ice tea and ice milk…woof woof….seriously i love arsenio, but its like watching your dad put the moves on a 19 year old..ehhee

  29. tommy says:

Welcome to the arsenio hall show, tonights guests are tood bridges from different strokes, emanuel lewis, from what was that show called again,,…the black guy from growing pains who will discuss his new job at subway as an artist, and finally the comedy dealings of bill cosby and the cosby kids, my next weeks guests are the return of paula abduel and her valium dealer, with special guest the black guy who played rolo on sanford and son….D list baby..oh and the guy who played steve urkel..yeah baby woof woof woof….Sorry arsenio, loved you back in the day, but like ex gfs and ex wives, ex talk show hosts should stay there…The only good thing is that total babe on the keyboards, now she is smokinggggggggggggggggggggggggggg hotttttttttttttttttttttttttt …

    • Sid says:

Hahahaha!! Exactly. I swear, I’m waiting for Arsenio to show up in a purple suit! Mark my words….that’s next. And what’s with the 2 lbs of makeup? He looks like an anime character….creeping me out.

  30. GameTime says:

I watched and was rather disappointed. How many white people jokes are we to be subjected to every night? If this was a white guy doing black people jokes he wouldn’t find anyplace in America to hide! So why are white people jokes okay? The NAACP would be raining lawsuits down on him.

Then there’s the Guest banter and “You’re great,” “No, you’re great,” Love you, man,” “No, love you man.” a dozen times. Not impressed. Even if the show was to look as if it had never left, the rest of us have moved on and expect the jokes, guests, and Arsenio to have moved with us.

Paula Abdul? Snoop Dog? Sorry I’m missing my sleep.

  31. I’m an Arsenio fan, so I will be sure to tune in everynight

  32. ZIL says:

I am a tv person …just love television…which is one of the reasons I could not wait for the “new” Arsenio Hall Show. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it was not a hit…but a sad miss. I loved Arsenio back in the day…and still hope that he can “pick it up” and get FUNNY! His jokes are not funny and in some cases make NO sense…his skits are tedious…and it is sad to see that he is just not the Arsenio we had before. I want him to succeed…but he needs to get better writers…better producers. He has lost his edge in joke telling….nothing is funny. For example, what is funny about “unlike IPhones that come in all colors….I come in only one color”? What is that about???!! Come on Arsenio, I know you are better than this.

  33. Gilbert Thompson says:

You are well dressed in tjhose sharp suits. Practice in front of a mirror-do not show your gums-teeth only!!! You look better with a toothy smile. GOD BLESS.

  34. Robert Yaffe says:

Remember he thrown off of a major network .He is only on a local network channel because of having a bigot and racist on his last show. As a host you need to speak up when someone on your show is out of line with the rest of America and Muslim Farrakhan is just that man ,and shame on Ktla in having a Blackman come back on without evening making a statement of an apology

    • Inaccurate. His original show, like his current, was syndicated. Paramount decided to end the series after the 93-94 season, due to loss of many key affiliates (many CBS affiliates carried the show, but either cancelled it or moved it to after hours when Letterman debuted; also, Fox affiliates dropped or delayed Arsenio when Fox debuted its epic fail “The Chevy Chase Show”).

  35. donald evans says:

i absolutely loved this show in the 1990’s as a teenager. now im in my 30’s i will watch and love him again…lol he should bring on minister louis farrakhan just to fuck with those racist bastards that canned him the first time…

  36. LJ says:

    I’m down.and will watch… but please grow a moustache…and get new writers…yours suck.

  37. Karen Knies says:

Loved you then and love you now!!!

  38. I predict that come February 24, Arsenio’s ratings might (eventually) start sinking like a stone.
That’s the night that Jimmy Fallon replaces the retiring Jay Leno as host of “The Tonight Show”; Fallon might start siphoning away Hall’s younger viewing demographic—much the way Leno did in 1992, when he replaced the aging Johnny Carson. It was Leno—and, a year later, Letterman moving to CBS (coupled with Fox’s flop “The Chevy Chase Show”) that put The Dog Pound to sleep.

  39. Well I must admit I haven’t watched his show yet. However I did watch it the first time he was on TV some 20 years ago, I hope that the years and time away from the whole talk show thing has taught Arsenio a few things. I do remember that his first show was very one sided and as a host dare I say he was quite racist and didn’t have any problem putting down or having derogatory comments to just about any other group of people, besides those of the African persuasion. Let’s hope he doesn’t go down that path this time and maybe he can avoid being canceled like last time.

  40. tommy says:

This is a continuation of my diary of watching the new arsenio hall show..Again, come on majic johnson and george lopez..are u kidding me..lopezs act is so tired and worn out its like your grandfather telling the same latino bario jokes he told in 1986.. George used to be funny, but come on arsenio, so far all of your talking guests are so B and C list..The rapper guy was kool though, and what about that hot chikca on the keyboards, man she rocks…the band is good, though, If arsenio keeps booking these B and C list stars, his show will be cancelled really fast. He got kick ass ratings first show, of course, the curiosity factor, but its a sinking ship, Seriously man Lisa kudrow, and Chris Tucker, yeah if it was 1999 or 2000 but friends ended a long time ago, I will continue to torture myself into watching tonights episode, if only for the hot chicka behind the keyboards….Woof Woof

    • Magic (not Majic) will always be an A list guest. I agree with you that George Lopez isn’t very funny, but the cool thing there was that he did stand-up. All in all, a pretty cool show. I think he’s getting his old buddies out there first, because that’s the kind of guy he is.

    • That “hot chicka behind the keyboards”—yes indeed, she sure is! That’s Victoria Theodore; I’ve been very good friends with her (though we’ve never met personally) since 2006, on Facebook—and before that, MySpace. She spent the last six years touring as Stevie Wonder’s keyboardist; she’s a classically trained pianist from Oberlin College. She is, as a matter of fact, the only reason I’m watching at all.

      • tommy says:

Hey thats nice to hear. You should hook up with her in persona and say hi…Next time you see her say tommyd says your one hot chicka..lol…No seriously she looks like a very intelligent and passionate woman about her music and her life..great to see hope she gets the exposure she deserves in the industry…Hey whatever happened to starr she must be like 50 now…

      • GameTime says:

If getting his buddies out there first is some kind of touchy-feely thing then he’s a poor businessman. Smiling, pointing, and the bad jokes just won’t hack it. Viewers want to have a party not sit around and talk about who’s a grandfather, and how successful Magic Johnson’s kids are, etc. People want a party. If Arsenio doesn’t pick it up a little, we’re gonna be gone and so is he and he can complain all he wants but this time, it’s his fault.

  41. leftlyl says:

I was watching Letterman 20 years ago but Dave just go too political for me. Thought I would be switching between Arsenio and Kimmel but I have watched all three and looking forward to the next. Good job Arsenio but loosen up a little. It’s like I’m watching a little league game and want him to do good. fun anyway

  42. First two episodes, I found myself yawning more than laughing. Tonight’s third episode, only slightly better. The show, however, still does have some issues. That female announcer sounds deadpan and unenthusiastic; she needs to be dropped, and Burton Richardson needs to be brought back. The premiere apparently won its timeslot in all the major markets; its success, however, may only be short-lived, since the premiere was panned by critics from The New York Times and others. My only reason for watching is that I’m very good friends (although we’ve never met personally) with one of the Posse members.

    • DaisyDuck says:

Agreed on the yawning, and Tucker was a terrible interviewee (It’s great! It’s great! It’s great!) But I thought the female announcer sounded hip and upbeat, though it can be hard to understand her because they have the music too loud. Besides, Richardson is old news.

    • ZIL says:

Agree….I don’t think Arsenio is going to make it. He needs better joke writers….maybe better producers. And….for goodness sake….get some decent guests. I like Magic Johnson…and he did a good job.. Chris Tucker and Lisa Kudrow????!! Your first week…your first show???!! What??!!! Is that the best you could do? Where is Eddie Murphy?

  43. tommy says:

Okay honestly I love arsenio, back in the day, I am now going to keep a diary of my experiences in watching his new show..Just watched his third episode, going into a b list coma, okay majic johnson, huge star, back in the day, and now just watched george lopez do a routine that was really not funny again b list stuff, okay arsenio even the audience looks like someone put some valium in their soda pop as you americans call it, trying to hold on and finish watching the show…Iam trying okay, iam trying arsenio to like your show honestly, somebody help me help me please, I am fading fast into the c list fast..arsenio pleassssssssssse have some a list guest on..will report tomorrow..woof woof

  44. I watched both episodes of the Arsenio Hall Show and I enjoyed them both. With that being said there are some kinks that need to be worked out i.e. the Lisa Kudrow clip should have been played after she was on the couch, but with an all white staff one can expect that the shows’ rhythm would be a bit off lol. If you watched the the second show you’ll understand the all white joke :) I wish The Arsenio Hall Show much success, and I will be tuned in every night, including tonight.

  45. tommy says:

Okay I tried again with the new arsenio hall show…come on man..lisa kudrow are u kidding me she was like back in the early 2000s come on who is on this week let me see todd bridges from different strokes, emanuel lewis, ah the black kid on welcome back kotter, linc from the mod squad,,oh yeah the old guy on sanford and son…They should call the show back in the day on the arsenio hall show..woof woof..

  46. Charae says:

NO NO NO! I gave him two tries and I can’t take it. His jokes are crappy and his guest are boring. So, as the saying saying goes 1st time shame on you; 2nd time shame on me. There will be NO 3rd time, I am done… Signed your sister from another mother….

  47. tommy says:

Okay so I gave it another shot and I thought okay maybe I was a little to hard on arsenio, watched his second show, and it was far worse than the first..Seriously Lisa Kudrow, didnt friends end about 8 years ago or so…Wow Arsenio is really booking some A listers??? Arsenio please please fire that staff of joke writers before you get cancelled. Go back to what you where hip, slick, with the A list crowd, this whole gosh gooly darn I am glad to be back is getting old fast, even the dogpound is slipping out to take their arthritits pills..woof woof..

    • Ev Collier says:

Did you people have a problem when Lisa Kudow appeared on both Good Morning America and Live with Kelly & Michael just this week?

  48. Bob Cook says:

I think WGN can find somthing better for that time slot, Cuz you just lost me……..& all my friends……Yes more Friends Please or the Honey Mooners…….Benny Hill…….. somthing else please……..

  49. I was a little disappointed but I think he is nervous. Give him time to get his groove back and I think it will be better than before. I do agree with some of the comments about needing better jokes. I’m not going to give up on his show yet.

  50. Alex says:

This new show sucks! They should cancel it!
