TV Editor Marco Zappia, Two-Time Emmy Winner, Dies at 76

Emmy-winning TV editor Marco Natale Zappia, who worked on shows including “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “The Jeffersons,” “The Sonny and Cher Show,” “Who’s the Boss?,” “Roseanne,” “Home Improvement” and “Boy Meets World,” died Sunday, December 22, in Ventura, Calif. He was 76.

Zappia won Emmys for CBS variety show “Hee-Haw” in 1971 and for special “Christmas in the Holy Land,” with Perry Como, in 1981. He earned an additional 18 nominations during a nearly four-decade career in which he edited thousands of hours of episodic television.

Zappia helped pioneer numerous technical advances in his field, including aiding in the research and development of the multi-cam Avid Editing System. He was the first to use the Avid to edit a multicam sitcom (“Home Improvement”).

He last worked on the ABC comedy “8 Simple Rules” from 2002-05.

Born in Los Angeles to Italian immigrants, Zappia owned a TV repair shop at one time. A broadcasting career that spanned nearly 40 years began with an engineering job at CBS in 1968.

Zappia was a longtime member of the Directors Guild of America, the Motion Picture Editors Guild, and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Most recently, he published his memoir, “Smartest Guy in the Room,” a reflection on his life and career in the entertainment business.

Zappia is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carole Ann; a daughter; a son; and six grandchildren.

Per Marco’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services. Condolences may be sent to Carole Ann Zappia, 2771 Bayshore Ave, Unit A Ventura, CA 93001.
