Wimbledon Final Smashes 2013 TV Record

Andy Murray win exceeded viewing figures for Wimbledon 2012 final

LONDON — Andy Murray’s Wimbledon final victory on Sunday drew the highest TV ratings of the year in Blighty for the BBC.

The British tennis star’s straight sets win over current world number one Novak Djokovic had a five-minute peak audience of 17.29 million people, which amounted to a 79.6% share of the overall U.K. TV audience of the time.

These stats came in just below the record 17.3 million for the 1980 Wimbledon final when Sweden’s Bjorn Borg beat American John McEnroe in a five-set match.

The Beeb said an average audience of 12.1 million viewers tuned in on Sunday for the Murray-Djokovic match on BBC One.

This year’s peak ratings and average ratings exceeded 2012’s Wimbledon final stats of 16.9 million peak and an 11.4 million average, which at the time became the biggest U.K. audience for any Wimbledon final in more than 20 years.

This year’s match exceeds ITV’s live “Britain’s Got Talent” final as the highest-rated 2013 program having drawn in a peak audience of 13.1 million last month.

Murray beat Djokovic in a three-set win on Sunday afternoon, marking the first time in 77 years that a British man won the singles tournament in Wimbledon.

Murray reached the final last year but lost to Roger Federer in four sets.
