When nine Emmys doesn’t cut it

Reiner fete low on count, high on fund-raising effort

Surely no presenter has been shouted down before by the honoree himself.

On Jan. 28, as Center Theater Group’s Dante Di Loreto gave accolades to Carl Reiner, he was interrupted during a speech as he cited Reiner’s “nine Emmys, a Grammy and numerous lifetime achievement awards.”

“It was 12 Emmys!” Reiner yelled out.

The Mark Taper Forum event honored Reiner’s 75 years in showbiz with a staged reading of “Enter Laughing,” the tuner with book by Reiner. The evening raised $290,000 for CTG.

There were also stories by son Rob Reiner, who talked about growing up with a famous dad who “was on TV before we bought a TV.”

CTG’s Michael Ritchie said, “I’m living a lifelong dream and a personal nightmare: following Billy Crystal and Rob Reiner and being followed by Carl Reiner.”
