NBC's 'The Voice,' Eye's 'Big Bang Theory' and A&E's 'Duck Dynasty' are week's top shows

NBC’s “The Voice” remained the top draw among young adults last week, but it was a more balanced Fox and CBS that emerged the network winners as April came to a close.

American Idol” placed both of its nights among the week’s top 10 slots, and comedies “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons” joined rookie drama “The Following” in the lower half of the top 20. CBS, meanwhile, had more top 20 shows in adults 18-49 (seven) than any other network — even though it aired no scripted originals on Monday or Wednesday.

It was also a big week for cable hits “Duck Dynasty” on A&E and “Game of Thrones” on HBO, both of which surged to series highs and won their timeslots in the 18-49 demo opposite broadcast fare.

Overall for the April 22-28 frame, according to Nielsen, Fox led in adults 18-49 with a 1.9 rating/6 share, followed by CBS (1.7/5), NBC (1.6/5), ABC (1.5/5) and Univision (1.4/4). CBS again finished on top in adults 25-54 (2.5/6) and total viewers (8.7 million).

CBS saw more soft numbers for “Golden Boy” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 7.94m) and “Vegas” (1.0/3, 7.50m), with the latter up a bit vs. its most recent original; both are still considered long shots to return for a second season. “The Good Wife,” which is returning, finished its fourth season Sunday on a slight uptick (1.6/4 in 18-49, 9.13m), nearly catching ABC’s “Revenge” in 18-49.

ABC was the 18-49 leader in the 10 o’clock hour on three weeknights: Monday with “Castle” (2.3/6 in 18-49, 11.76m), Tuesday with “Body of Proof” (1.6/4 in 18-49, 9.35m) and Thursday with “Scandal” (2.8/8 in 18-49, 7.90m). It wasn’t pretty at 10 p.m. on Sunday, though, where rookie “Red Widow” limped to a 0.7/2 in 18-49 with its penultimate episode.

At NBC, “The Voice” was big again on both Monday (4.9/14 in 18-49, 14.15m) and Tuesday (4.1/13, 12.78m), but the net couldn’t fully capitalize on it; “Revolution” hit a low behind it on Monday (2.0/6, 5.88m) and “Ready for Love” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.86m) is exiting the net’s schedule after its final weak aring on Tuesday. NBC will look to improve on Tuesdays by moving over Friday drama “Grimm” to the night to finish the season.

“American Idol” led the way for Fox, as the net won another Wednesday with the two-hour performance show on Wednesday (3.3/9 in 18-49, 12.46m); still, the show remains down more than 20% from last year. Monday saw rising numbers for the season’s penultimate episode of  “The Following” (2.4/6 in 18-49, 7.04m), which then grew to a seven-week high for its finale on Monday of the current week (2.7/7 in 18-49, 7.82m).

In cable, A&E’s “Duck Dynasty” (4.3/14 in 18-49, 9.63m) built 10% week to week to close its third season with record numbers for the network. And HBO’s “Game of Thrones” hit another high for the third straight week (2.8/7 in 18-49, 5.35m) and has surpassed “True Blood” as the premium cabler’s most-watched series.

TNT, getting a boost from the NBA Playoffs, was the top-rated cable network in all categories. Among non-sports nets, the top cabler in 18-49 and 25-54 was A&E, which in addition to “Duck Dynasty” also saw more solid numbers for new drama “Bates Motel” (1.3/3, 2.93m)

The NFL Draft was up for its full three-day duration, though Thursday’s first-round coverage on ESPN (2.9/9 in 18-49, 6.20m) was down 14% from last year due to a lack of marquee quarterbacks this time around.
