Net tops NBC to rank as No. 4 broadcaster in 18-49
If it wasn’t already apparent, Univision is one of the big boys on the broadcast block. The Spanish-language network on Wednesday put a bow on an historic February, which saw it finish ahead of one of the Big Four broadcasters — NBC — in a major sweep for the first time. According to most current Nielsen data for the sweep, which ended Wednesday night, Univision averaged a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49 to a 1.3 for NBC, beating the Peacock on 26 of the 28 nights. CBS comfortably led overall, its first victory since an Olympics-fueled February in 1998; its 4.4 rating was well ahead of ABC (2.4) and Fox (2.3). (Each 18-49 ratings point represents roughly 1.27 million viewers.) In total viewers, Univision still ranked fifth (3.7 million) but it was up vs. last year and gained ground on NBC (4.3 million). CBS ran away with the month (15.8 million), followed by ABC (7.8 million) and Fox (6.9 million). In another first for Univision in a February sweep, it finished as the No. 1 broadcaster on Friday night in 18-49, topping runner-up ABC by 13%. It also made it five straight years as the top broadcaster on Fridays in February among the more narrow 18-34 group. Univision said it also finished the sweep as the No. 1 broadcaster among adults 18-49 and total viewers in the Los Angeles market. And it ranked second, behind the CBS station, among total viewers in both Houston and Miami. Leading the way for Univision were its trio of weeknight novelas, which beat numerous Big Four series in 18-49 during the month, including ABC’s “Body of Proof,” CBS’ “Amazing Race,” NBC’s “The New Normal” and Fox’s “Touch.” On the final night of the sweep, “Por Ella Soy Eva” (For Her, I’m Eva) averaged a 2.2/6 in 18-49 and 4.88 million viewers overall in the 8 o’clock hour (finishing ahead of comedies on NBC and ABC in the demo), and “Amores Verdaderos” (True Love) pulled a 2.0/5 and 4.58 million in the 9 o’clock hour (ahead of NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” in the demo).
