U.K. Fetes Angela Lansbury in New Year’s Honors List

Showbiz figures honored include Michael Crawford, Dominic Cooke

LONDON — Actress Angela Lansbury, who is best known for her role as Jessica Fletcher in TV series “Murder, She Wrote,” has been feted by the U.K. government in its New Year’s Honors list.

Lansbury, who was born in London, was awarded the historic title of Dame. She told the BBC: “It’s a lovely thing to be given that nod of approval by your own country and I really cherish it.”

Also named a Dame were choreographer Gillian Lynne, whose credits include “Cats” and “The Phantom of the Opera,” and actress Penelope Keith, who appeared in BBC sitcoms “The Good Life” and “To the Manor Born.”

Actor Michael Crawford, who played in 1970s sitcom “Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em” as well as several lauded stage musicals such as “Barnum” and “The Phantom of the Opera,” was named a Commander of the British Empire, as was ballet dancer Carlos Acosta, the former artistic director of the Royal Court theater Dominic Cooke, TV producer and talent agent Peter Bennett-Jones, and Karren Brady, who appears on the local version of “The Apprentice.”

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins picked up the Order of the British Empire, as did best-selling author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, and Chris Corbould, a special effects supervisor who has worked on many James Bond films and won an Oscar for his work on “Inception.”
